These twenty-two works afford a fascinating overview of the beginnings and early development of the baroque solo and trio sonata idioms. Moreover, they document the ever-widening exploration of violin technique at a time when that instrument was first being used in a soloistic setting.

Opus 51

1999
Abstract Opus 51, pubhshed in 1850, includes Sehnsucht,Volksliedchen, Ich wandre nicht, Auf dem Rhein, and Liebeslied. The first three songs were composed in 1840. It is not possible to definitively date the composition of Auf dem Rhein, but Liebeslied first appeared in 1850.

Opus 77

Abstract Opus 77 contains songs written in the years 1840 and 1850. Der frohe Wandersmann, #1, comes from the Spring of 1840. It was originally intended as the first song of the Eichendorff Liederkreis, op. 39, but was wisely removed by Schumann from the 1850 edition.
