EVALUATION OF ORAL IRON GALACTAN AS A METHOD OF IRON SUPPLEMENTATION FOR INTENSIVELY HOUSED SUCKING PIGLETS

Australian Veterinary Journal, 1978
SUMMARY Iron supplementation of piglets with oral galactan given as a single dose within 24 hours of birth was evaluated in a series of on farm trials. The growth rate of piglets receiving this treatment was faster than that of piglets receiving single injections of iron dextran or iron galactan at 3 days of age, or ferrous sulphate crystals orally at ...

Repletion of Iron Stores With the Use of Oral Iron Supplementation in Patients With Systolic Heart Failure

Journal of Cardiac Failure, 2015
Iron deficiency is associated with reduced functional capacity and increased mortality in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Correction of iron deficiency in HFrEF patients with the use of intravenous iron improves symptoms, quality of life, and exercise performance.

Oral or parenteral iron supplementation to reduce deferral, iron deficiency and/or anaemia in blood donors

Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, 2014
Iron deficiency is a significant cause of deferral in people wishing to donate blood. If iron removed from the body through blood donation is not replaced, then donors may become iron deficient. All donors are screened at each visit for low haemoglobin (Hb) levels. However, some deferred blood donors do not return to donate.

Does oral iron supplementation have an erythropoietic effect?

BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, 1982
Summary. Haematological indices and serum ferritin were measured for 6 months in 20 healthy non‐pregnant women, nine of whom took oral iron supplements. Whereas the mean serum ferritin concentration increased from 16.2 μg/1 to 41.7 μg/1 during oral iron supplementation, the mean haemoglobin concentration remained unchanged at 13.5g/dl.
