Towards a conceptualisation of Order Picking 4.0

open access: yesComputers and Industrial Engineering, 2021
Abstract Order picking is a key task in almost all supply chains and has a significant effect on operational efficiency of warehouses. Although most companies still rely on manual order picking, research on diverse possibilities to automate order picking tasks or support human order pickers with technology is increasing rapidly.

Order-picking methods: improving order-picking efficiency

International Journal of Logistics Systems and Management, 2007
Order-picking, or the process of retrieving items from storage locations in response to a specific customer request, is the most laborious and the most costly activity in a typical warehouse. This is especially true in the case of the conventional warehouses, with almost 90% of total time spent on order-picking activities and 55% of all operating costs

Order batching in walk-and-pick order picking systems

International Journal of Production Research, 2008
This paper investigates the order-batching problem both as a theoretical problem, including its special variants, and as a practical problem, with possible heuristic solution procedures. It shows that certain special cases or variants of the order batching problem are solvable, while other cases of the problem are NP-hard.

Design of order picking system

The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2008
Numerous design and cost parameters, combined with an endless variety of equipment types, make it difficult to choose the right order picking system (OPS). The purpose of this study is to develop a methodology to support warehouse designers in choosing the most suitable OPS.

PICKING CLUMPY ORDERS ON A CAROUSEL

Probability in the Engineering and Informational Sciences, 2004
Carousels are rotatable closed-loop storage systems for small items, where items are stored in bins along the loop. An order at a carousel consists of (say) n different items stored there. We analyze two problems: (1) minimizing the total time to fill an order (travel time) and (2) order delays as they arrive, are filled, and depart.
