Hybrid Order Statistic Filter and its Application to Image Restoration
We introduce a new nonlinear filter for signal and image restoration, the hybrid order statistic (HOS) filter. Because it exploits both rank- and spatial-order information, the HOS realizes the advantages of nonlinear filters in edge preservation and ...

Despite frogs avoiding low temperatures, examination of four salamander species revealed that none avoided cold and all possessed cold tolerance. Functional analysis of TRPM8, a cold sensor, showed that all salamander TRPM8s had lost their cold sensitivity.

Bootstrap and Higher-Order Expansion Validity When Instruments May Be Weak [PDF]
It is well-known that size-adjustments based on Edgeworth expansions for the t-statistic perform poorly when instruments are weakly correlated with the endogenous explanatory variable.

Extended Linear Order Statistic (ELOS) Aggregation and Regression
The ordered weighted average (OWA) operator is a well-known aggregation tool that is primarily used for decisionlevel fusion. However, the OWA is a convex sum, i.e., its learned coefficients are constrained to sum to one, and thus the output is ...

Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

A note on testing symmetry of the error distribution in linear regression models [PDF]
In the classical linear regression model the problem of testing for symmetry of the error distribution is considered. The test statistic is a functional of the difference between the two empirical distribution functions of the estimated residuals and ...

Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Order statistic filters for image matching
The rank and census are two filters based on order statistics which have been applied to the image matching problem for stereo pairs. Advantages of these filters include their robustness to radiometric distortion and small amounts of random noise, and ...

Asymptotic properties of a goodness-of-fit test based on maximum correlations [PDF]
We study the efficiency properties of the goodness-of-fit test based on the Qn statistic introduced in Fortiana and Grané (2003) using the concepts of Bahadur asymptotic relative efficiency and Bahadur asymptotic optimality.

YIPFα1A expression is regulated by multilayered molecular mechanisms
YIPFα1A, a five‐pass Golgi protein, is regulated at multiple layers. (1) Rare‐codon enrichment drives translation‐coupled mRNA decay. (2) A proximal 3′‐UTR element stabilizes mRNA. (3) A distal 3′‐UTR element included by alternate poly(A) site usage represses translation, which can be overridden by the proximal 3′‐UTR element.
