On the bosonic origin of the elastic constants of the solids
It is shown that the elastic compliances, sij, are defined, as the elastic stiffness constants, cij, by bosons. The constants cij are well-known to be given by the velocities of the sound waves, called here Debye-bosons. Sound waves are evidently elastic

Dirty, Skewed, and Backwards: The Smectic $A$-$C$ Phase Transition in Aerogel
We study the smectic AC transition in anisotropic and uniaxial disordered environments, e.g., aerogel with an external field. We find very strange behavior of translational correlations: the low-temperature, lower-symmetry Smectic C phase is itless ...

Single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assays for high‐throughput DNA–protein interaction studies
We describe an optimised single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assay that visualises DNA–protein interactions in real time. Linear DNA fragments are tethered to a surface and stretched by buffer flow for fluorescence imaging. Using λ and φX174 DNA, this protocol enhances reproducibility and accessibility, providing a versatile approach for studying diverse ...

Methodological integration in the study of religions
"Religions" constitute a field of study and accordingly "the study of religion (or religions)" is a discipline. What is a discipline, that is, in the scientific sense?

We investigated the temperature ($T=$ 15 $\sim $ 290 K) and the magnetic field ($H=$ 0 $\sim $ 17 T) dependent optical conductivity spectra of a charge/orbital ordered manganite, Nd$_{1/2}$Sr$_{1/2}$MnO$_3$.

Amino acids sequence of two different proteins with the same sequence (chameleon sequence—black boxes) represent in 3D structure of the proteins different secondary structures: HHHH—helical and BBB—Beta‐structural. The chains folded in water environment adopt different III‐order structures in which the chameleon fragments appear to adopt similar status

Many of the theorems of real analysis, against the background of the ordered field axioms, are equivalent to Dedekind completeness, and hence can serve as completeness axioms for the reals.

Why human connection is the true metric of research success
Human‐centred mentorship can be shaped by mentor attributes, actions, intrinsic drive and career ambition. Drawing on reflections across Singapore and France, as well as workshop insights from FEBS‐IUBMB ENABLE 2024, this article shows that human‐centred mentorship creates the conditions for sustainable growth, well‐being and retention in research ...

Spontaneous charge-ordered state in Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene
We propose that a weakly spontaneous charge-ordered insulating state probably exists in Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene, which can account for experimentally observed nonmonotonic behavior of resistance as a function of the gated field, namely, the gap ...

Orders in quadratic fields, II
This work continues part I with the same title [ibid., No. 3, 45-48 (1993; Zbl 0795.11056)] and also complements the work of the authors where they dealt with the real case [Reduced ideals, the divisor function, continued fractions and class numbers of real quadratic fields, to appear in Publ. Math.].
