Geological and geotechnical challenges on the Great Dyke of Zimbabwe and their impact on hardrock pillar design

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The Great Dyke of Zimbabwe is notable for its rich platinum group metal deposits but poses significant geological and geotechnical challenges due to its complex rock types and structural features. Traditional pillar design methods are insufficient for addressing these complexities; the study suggests incorporating advanced techniques such as machine ...

Geostatistical Modeling by the Ordinary Kriging in the Estimation of Mineral Resources on the Kieselguhr Mine, Algeria

open access: yesIOP Conference Series: Earth and Environment, 2019
The most important step in a feasibility study of a mining project is the determination of reserves in situ. But the question which arises that no method of estimation can give exact value since there is inevitably an associated error when it is ...

Numerical investigation on the influence of mesoscopic deformation on contact area and hydraulic aperture to fracture seepage

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Fluid flow through a single fracture is commonly described by the cubic law. However, deviations from this model are expected because natural fracture surfaces are rough and in contact with each other in discrete regions. In this study, the interactions between fracture closure, contact area, and hydraulic characterization of mesoscopic‐scale rough ...

Machine learning and topological kriging for river water quality data interpolation

open access: yesAIMS Environmental Science
Monitoring of river water quality data is crucial to prevent river water pollution. With limited sampling data, the statistical method of kriging interpolation is indispensable. This method can predict unsampled values based on interconnected surrounding

Optimal biased Kriging: Homeogram tapering and applications to geoid undulations in Korea

open access: yesJournal of Geodetic Science, 2018
This article studies the Optimal Biased Kriging (OBK) approach which is an alternative geostatistical method that gives up the unbiasedness condition of Ordinary Kriging (OK) to gain an improved Mean Squared Prediction Error (MSPE).

Earthquake precursory detection using diurnal GPS-TEC and kriging interpolation maps: 12 May 2008, Mw7.9 Wenchuan case study

open access: yesMethodsX, 2022
This study presents an alternative vertical total electron content (VTEC) anomaly detection technique based on diurnal VTEC values. In order to assess the consistency of the results, Mw7.9 Wenchuan earthquake occurred on May 12, 2008 was chosen as case ...

Neural Network Models for Solar Irradiance Forecasting in Polluted Areas: A Comparative Study

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, EarlyView.
Pollution‐aware hybrid ensemble model is proposed to forecast solar irradiance across eight diverse cities. The model integrates MLP, RNN, and NARX to handle varying atmospheric pollution levels. The model outperforms state‐of‐the‐art methods with enhanced accuracy and interpretability on standard solar irradiance data set.
