Two unlinked loci controlling the sex of blue tilapia (Oreochromis aureus) [PDF]

open access: yesHeredity, 2004
Sex determination in the blue tilapia (Oreochromis aureus) is thought to be a WZ-ZZ (female heterogametic) system controlled by a major gene. We searched for DNA markers linked to this major gene using the technique of bulked segregant analysis. We identified 11 microsatellite markers on linkage group 3 which were linked to phenotypic sex. The putative

Detection of Unauthorized Tilapia Species Circulating in Cage Farms on Lake Volta

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 6, Issue 2, April 2026.
ABSTRACT The Akosombo strain of Nile tilapia is the only approved tilapia strain for culture in Ghana. In this study, exotic red tilapia suspected to be cultured in fish farms within the Lower Volta River Basin of the Lake Volta were collected for species identification based on their morphological features.

Growth performance of exotic Oreochromis niloticus, exotic Oreochromis niloticus fed with pelleted feeds in flow-through system [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
Local, exotic and hybrid tilapia fingerlings were fed 45% crude protein diet containing 18% fish meal in a flow through system in triplicate and their growth and food utilization observed for 14 weeks.

From Synthesis to Therapeutics: Bioactive‐Coated Zein Nanoparticles in Drug Delivery

open access: yesBiopolymers, Volume 117, Issue 2, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Polymeric zein nanoparticles (ZNP), derived from corn protein, are biodegradable drug carriers with high stability and low synthesis costs. Their amphiphilic nature allows efficient encapsulation of both hydrophilic and lipophilic drugs, making them promising for drug delivery.

TRIVALENT CHROMIUM (CR+3) IN DIETARY CARBOHYDRATE AND ITS EFFECT ON THE GROWTH OF COMMONLY CULTIVATED FISH [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Trivalent chromium (Cr+3) is an essential trace mineral for fish bio-physiological functions. Researches on Cr+3 in the form of organic compound indicated that the mineral affected the bio-activity of insulin, the blood glucose influx, and subsequently ...

Gummies as a Novel Approach to Valorize Rainbow Trout Wastes

open access: yesJournal of Food Science, Volume 91, Issue 3, March 2026.
ABSTRACT In this study, a potential waste management strategy was developed for the evaluation of marine and freshwater fish waste, which is chemically very similar. To this end, an unmet need has been addressed by converting by‐products from rainbow trout, a cold‐water fish, into functional and nutritious ingredients.

Testis-Ova in Spawning Blue Tilapia, Oreochromis aureus

open access: yesGulf Research Reports, 1985
Hermaphroditism characterized by the presence of oocytes in the testes is described in the blue tilapia, Oreochromis aureus, for the first time. Testis-ova were observed in three of 24 spawning males exhibiting otherwise normal male morphology. The testis-ova appeared non-vitellogenic and lacked a follicle cell layer.

Global Patterns and Gaps in Research on Salinity Tolerance of Inland Fishes

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, Volume 27, Issue 2, Page 400-411, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Freshwater salinization is an emerging threat impacting approximately one‐third of the world's freshwater bodies. However, the salinity tolerance of many inland fishes remains understudied, despite being a crucial factor in determining species distributions and fitness.
