Near-infrared orientation of Mozambique tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus

Zoology, 2012
Light plays a pivotal role in animal orientation. Aquatic animals face the problem that penetration of light in water is restricted through high attenuation which limits the use of visual cues. In pure water, blue and green light penetrates considerably deeper than red and infrared spectral components.

Hepatic toxicological responses of SiO2 nanoparticle on Oreochromis mossambicus

Environmental Toxicology and Pharmacology, 2020
The present study was carried out to investigate the impact of various concentrations of SiO2 nanoparticles (SiO2 NP) on the commonly available freshwater fish Oreochromis mossambicus. The 96 h median lethal concentration (LC50) of SiO2 NP was found to be between 270-280 ppm.

Feminization of Oreochromis mossambicus by the administration of diethylstilbestrol

Aquaculture, 1989
Abstract Gonadally undifferentiated Oreochromis mossambicus fry were given different doses of diethylstilbestrol (DES) orally for 11 or 15 days and reared for 70 days. All-female populations were produced at doses >100 μg DES/g diet in both treatments. Mortality increased at higher doses (>500 μg/g). The hormone treatment significantly ( P >0.0005)

Induction of sex reversal in Oreochromis mossambicus by diethylstilbestrol

Journal of Applied Ichthyology, 1990
Summary The efficacy of the synthetic estrogen, diethylstilbestrol (DES), for sex-reversal in the Java tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus was investigated. Fry of 8–10 mm total length were fed diets containing 25, 50 and 100 ppm of DES for 30 days in plastic pools; this was followed by 45–65 days rearing in fertilized cement cisterns where hormone ...

Basolateral dipeptide transport by the intestine of the teleost Oreochromis mossambicus

American Journal of Physiology-Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology, 1996
Transport characteristics of [14C]glycylsarcosine ([14C]Gly-Sar) were measured in herbivorous tilapi (Oreochromis mossambicus) intestinal basolateral membrane vesicles (BLMV) purified with Percoll gradient centrifugation. Specific activity of the vesicle Na(+)-K(+)-adenosinetriphos- phatase was increased 12-fold, whereas specific activity of the brush-

Temperature sensitivity of skeletal ontogeny in Oreochromis mossambicus

Journal of Fish Biology, 2004
Sensitivity of skeletal ontogenesis to temperature was assessed in Mozambican tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus and culture temperature manipulations (22, 27 and 32° C) were used to establish if age or length gave the most suitable metric for standardization.

Innate‐immune responses of tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) exposure to acute cold stress

Journal of Cellular Physiology, 2019
In this present study, Oreochromis mossambicus tilapia were transferred to cold water at 12°C for various time intervals (1, 4, 8, 24, and 48 hr) and its innate immune response was analyzed by studying cellular and humoral parameters.

Basolateral glucose transport by intestine of teleost, Oreochromis mossambicus

American Journal of Physiology-Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology, 1987
Transport characteristics of D-glucose by isolated basolateral membrane vesicles of the teleost fish, Oreochromis mossambicus, were measured. Specific activity of the vesicle Na-K-adenosinetriphosphatase was increased 11-fold, whereas specific activities of brush-border and organelle membrane enzymes were enriched only 0.3- to 0.8-fold.

Effect of copper on blood coagulation of Oreochromis mossambicus (Cichlidae)

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part C: Pharmacology, Toxicology and Endocrinology, 1995
The effect of copper on the blood coagulation in freshwater fish, Oreochromis mossambicus was investigated. These fish were exposed to sublethal copper concentrations over short-term (96 hr) and long-term (4 wk) periods, at 29 +/- 1 degree C (summer) and 19 +/- 1 degree C (winter), in experimental flow-through systems.

Effect of thyroid hormones on hatching in the tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus

General and Comparative Endocrinology, 1991
Incubation of fertilized eggs of Oreochromis mossambicus in media containing varying doses of T3, T4, and phenylthiocarbamide (PTC) indicated that the thyroid hormones delayed hatching, while the antithyroid drug accelerated it. Denuded eggs were also incubated in the above media and the media were assayed at various time intervals for hatching enzyme.
