The accumulation of organic matter allows inferences about a wide selection of processes in the geological past. The Kimmeridge Clay Formation (Yorkshire, UK) can be regarded as a model of the formation of hydrocarbon source rocks. The driving force of organic matter accumulation is the organic phytoplankton productivity, whereas oxygenation conditions

Dissolved organic matter reduces algal accumulation of methylmercury
Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, 2012Abstract Dissolved organic matter (DOM) significantly decreased accumulation of methylmercury (MeHg) by the diatom Cyclotella meneghiniana in laboratory experiments. Live diatom cells accumulated two to four times more MeHg than dead cells, indicating that accumulation may be partially an energy-requiring process.

Sedimentary Processes and the Accumulation of Organic Matter
1978The accumulation of organic matter in sediment is controlled by a number of geological boundary conditions. It is practically restricted to sediment deposited in aquatic environments, which must receive a certain minimum amount of organic matter. This organic matter can be supplied either in the form of dead or living particulate organic matter or as ...

The Effect of the Organic Matter Composition on POP Accumulation in Soil
Water, Air, & Soil Pollution, 2012The effect of different humic fractions on polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contamination in soils was tested in the field by means of 53 soil samples from a high-altitude grassland plateau in the Italian Alps. Three humic fractions (humin, humic acids, and fulvic acids) were characterized in parallel by quantifying 12 PCB congeners to establish a direct

Production, assimilation and accumulation of organic matter in ecosystems
Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1974Abstract Current equations for energy flow through populations and ecosystems use the term net production for two distinct concepts: (1) the rate at which new organic matter is produced after providing for maintenance, and (2) the rate at which the standing crop of organic matter changes.
