The Time Is Right to Focus on Model Organism Metabolomes

open access: yesMetabolites, 2016
Model organisms are an essential component of biological and biomedical research that can be used to study specific biological processes. These organisms are in part selected for facile experimental study. However, just as importantly, intensive study of

Social Movements: Organizations and Organizing

open access: yes, 2017
We discuss two lines of research that emerged at the crossroads of social movement studies and organization theory, focusing on organizations and organizing, respectively. We speak of ‘organizations’ and ‘organizing’ to emphasize that the ‘social movement/organizations’ nexus is distinct from the ‘social movement/organizing’ nexus.

Cis‐unsaturated sphingolipids support growth of sphingoid base‐deficient yeast but impair plasma membrane integrity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Sphingoid base structures, the sphingolipid backbones, vary among species. We established yeast cells in which the native sphingoid base was replaced with plant‐type bases containing cis or trans double bonds. This is, to our knowledge, the first eukaryotic model mostly composed of sphingolipids containing cis‐unsaturated sphingoid base, providing a ...

Most autophagic cell death studies lack evidence of causality

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Of 104 studies claiming autophagic cell death (ACD), only 13 demonstrated both causality and exclusion of apoptosis to confirm true ACD. Most studies relied on correlation‐level data or measured autophagy in isolation, revealing pervasive methodological shortcomings.

Zinc in the Animal Organism: A Review

open access: yes, 2017
Zinc, as an essential metal, is necessary for the correct function of an organism. It is involved in biochemical processes that affect the immune response of an organism, and it acts as a neuromodulator in the excitatory synapses of the brain.

Phosphomimetic mutations near active sites of proteins in Thermus thermophilus suggest a widespread regulatory mechanism

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In Thermus thermophilus, more than half of the phosphorylation sites identified by proteomic analysis are located near the active site. All phosphomimetic mutants of phosphosites of six enzymes belonging to different families showed severely reduced activity compared with the wild‐type, particularly in the turnover number.
