Almond Shell‐Derived Cellulosic Microfibres: Extraction, Characterisation and Applications in Sustainable Paper‐Based Packaging

open access: yesPackaging Technology and Science, Volume 39, Issue 10, Page 1231-1251, October 2026.
Cellulosic microfibres were extracted from almond shells using organosolv, soda and kraft processes, and comprehensive physicochemical, surface, thermal and morphological characterisation demonstrated their strong potential as sustainable fillers for paper‐based packaging application. ABSTRACT This study develops pathways for the valorisation of almond

Direct Precipitation of Lignin Nanoparticles from Wheat Straw Organosolv Liquors Using a Static Mixer

open access: yesMolecules, 2020
Micro- and nanosize lignin shows improved properties compared to standard lignin available today and has been gaining interest in recent years. Lignin is the largest renewable resource with an aromatic skeleton on earth but it is used for relatively low ...

Formosolv Pretreatment to Fractionate Paulownia Wood Following a Biorefinery Approach: Isolation and Characterization of the Lignin Fraction

open access: yesAgronomy, 2020
Paulownia is a rapid-growth tree with a high biomass production rate per year and low demand of water, which make it very suitable for intercropping systems, as it protects the crops from adverse climatic conditions, benefiting the harvest yields ...

Microwave‐Assisted Subcritical Water Extraction Method for the Optimized Isolation of Cellulose From Residual Soybean Hulls

open access: yesChemSusChem, Volume 19, Issue 17, 14 September 2026.
Almost pure cellulose was extracted from soybean hulls by microwave‐assisted alkaline treatment (MW‐NaOH) and characterized. The microwave‐assisted subcritical water extraction (MASWE) of waste biomass falls within the circular economy approach, promotes sustainability, and reduces both treatment times and the use of harsh chemicals.

Valorization of Byproducts from the Sugarcane Industry Through Production of 1,3-Propanediol by Lentilactobacillus diolivorans

open access: yesFermentation
This study aims to evaluate the use of sugarcane industry byproducts (bagasse and molasses), as well as glycerol from the liquor of the organosolv pretreatment of bagasse, to bioproduce 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO).

Toward Plastic‐Free Vineyards: The Role of Bioplastics in Sustainable Viticulture—A Review

open access: yesPolymers for Advanced Technologies, Volume 37, Issue 9, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Agricultural value chains consume more than 12.5 Mt. of plastics annually, and vineyard systems are a notable source of short‐lived plastic waste. In viticulture, conventional plastics improve agricultural efficiency, crop protection, and wine quality, but their widespread use raises environmental and health concerns.

Advancements and Challenges in Second‐ and Third‐Generation Biofuels: A Comparative Analysis of Lignocellulosic and Algal Feedstocks

open access: yesSafety Science and Technology, Volume 1, Issue 3, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Advanced biofuels derived from nonfood biomass are increasingly recognized as strategic components of low‐carbon energy systems, particularly for sectors where direct electrification remains difficult. Second‐generation biofuels from lignocellulosic residues and third‐generation biofuels from algal and aquatic biomass offer complementary ...

Recent Developments in Electrochemical Lignin Depolymerization Using Flow Systems: A Mini Review

open access: yesChemElectroChem, Volume 13, Issue 16, 18 August 2026.
This review summarizes the current state of the electrochemical depolymerization of lignin focusing on studies performed in flow cells. Three anodic strategies are distinguished: oxygen evolution reaction substitution for energy‐efficient hydrogen generation, nonselective oligomer production, and selective aromatic monomer synthesis, such as vanillin ...

Optimisation of Acetic Acid Lignofibre Organosolv Process

open access: yesBioResources, 2015
Birch wood chips were cooked in acetic acid in the presence of phosphinic acid according to the Lignofibre (LGF) organosolv process. The cooking trials were performed according to an experimental design with process time, temperature, and the presence (or absence) of alkaline pre-extraction as the factors.
