Animating Rawls’s Original Position

Teaching Philosophy, 1996

Human Embryos in the Original Position?

Journal of Medicine and Philosophy, 2005
Two different discussions in John Rawls' A Theory of Justice lead naturally to a rather conservative position on the moral status of the human embryo. When discussing paternalism, he claims that the parties in the original position would seek to protect themselves in case they end up as incapacitated or undeveloped human beings when the veil of ...

Intermittent positional downbeat nystagmus of cervical origin

Auris Nasus Larynx, 2014
Intermittent positional down beat nystagmus (p-DBN) is rare. We describe an unusual case of intermittent p-DBN which was induced by rotation, anteflexion, and lateral flexion of the neck. A 59-year-old man complained of loss of consciousness and lightheadedness. Positional testing revealed the p-DBN.

Tracing also the quest for “positive mimesis,” the article

On The Origin Of Positional Alcohol Nystagmus

Acta Oto-Laryngologica, 1973
The vestibular system plays an important role in the origin of positional alcohol nystagmus (P.A.N.). An investigation was performed on the effect of artificial lesions in the peripheral vestibular organs of rabbits upon P.A.N. In rabbits in which the otoliths were eliminated on both sides, a P.A.N. could not be provoked.

A Positive Alternative: Revived Originals

2020
I propose a radically different approach to address the pressing problem of cultural overtourism. Instead of limiting demand, which would exclude many art lovers, supply should be increased by providing alternative offers. I call these additional new cultural sites Revived Originals.

Defense of the Original Position

2013
In Chap. 5, I argue that metaphysical objections to Rawls’s characterization of the person in the “original position” are unsuccessful. I explain the original position, which is a hypothetical decision procedure in which a person who is subject to certain unusual constraints is asked to select the principles she would like to govern her society.
