Protease activity in female "Ornithodoros tholozani" ticks

The protease activity in guts of Ornithodoros tholozani females was studied in vitro. The intracellular protease in Ornithodoros tholozani guts has a pH optimum of about 3.0. Hemoglobin is the preferred substrate, and bovine serum albumin is digested very slowly. In this respect the protease resembles cathepsin D.

Sex Pheromone Regulation of Mating Behavior in the Tick Ornithodoros (Ornithodoros) savignyi (Audouin) (Acari: Argasidae)

Bioassays performed on Ornithodoros (Ornithodoros) savignyi (Audouin) demonstrated the presence of a female sex pheromone. Unfed adults and fed adults, after various postfeeding periods, were cross-tested. Two independent criteria were used: the percentage of positive male responses and the time elapsed before these responses.

Genus Ornithodoros Koch, 1844

The genus Ornithodoros was first described with the reclassification of Ornithodoros coriaceus and Ornithodoros savignyi, which had previously been attributed to the genus Argas. Koch translated ‘Ornis’, which means bird from Greek to Latin and ‘doros’ meaning a leather sack (Petney and Maiwald in Tick nomenclature. Lancet 348:1251, 1996).

Ornithodoros moubata: Host immunoglobulin G in tick hemolymph

Hemolymph proteins of a soft tick, Ornithodoros moubata, were analyzed immunochemically and biochemically. The components of tick hemolymph proteins were shown to be totally different from the host (rabbit) serum proteins by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis with sodium dodecyl sulfate and Coomassie blue or silver stain.
