What makes orphans in Kigali, Rwanda, non‐adherent to antiretroviral therapy? Perspectives of their caregivers

open access: yesJournal of the International AIDS Society, 2014
Introduction Every year, approximately 260,000 children are infected with HIV in low‐ and middle‐income countries. The timely initiation and high level of maintenance of antiretroviral therapy (ART) are crucial to reducing the suffering of HIV‐positive ...

Mass spectrometry based identification of AMP‐O‐Tris generated by Thermococcus onnurineus Cas10

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Isolated Thermococcus onnurineus Cas10 generates the noncanonical ATP‐derived product AMP‐O‐Tris while in Tris‐containing buffer as identified via mass spectrometry, revealing relaxed nucleophile selectivity under isolated conditions. These findings suggest that multiprotein Csm complex assembly restricts Cas10 reactivity toward canonical cyclic ...

Early Clinical, Imaging, and Pathological Characteristics of SRPK3/TTN‐Digenic Myopathy

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective SRPK3/TTN‐digenic myopathy was recently established as a skeletal muscle myopathy caused by digenic inheritance. This study characterizes the early clinical presentation of SRPK3/TTN‐digenic myopathy in one previously reported and seven newly identified pediatric patients.

C/D box snoRNA SNORD113-6 guides 2′-O-methylation and protects against site-specific fragmentation of tRNALeu(TAA) in vascular remodeling

open access: yesMolecular Therapy: Nucleic Acids, 2022
C/D box small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs) of the DLK1-DIO3 locus are associated with vascular remodeling and cardiovascular disease. None of these snoRNAs has any known targets yet except for one, AF357425/SNORD113-6.

Orphan drugs

open access: yesMedicinski pregled, 2013
Introduction. Drugs used for treatment of rare diseases are known worldwide under the term of orphan drugs because pharmaceutical companies have not been interested in ?adopting? them, that is in investing in research, developing and producing these drugs.

Cancer‐Associated Fibroblasts Promote Tumor Immunosuppression in Hepatocellular Carcinoma via the NNMT‐ANGPTL4 Axis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background & Aims: Cancer‐associated fibroblasts (CAFs) drive immunosuppression in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, their metabolic regulation remains poorly defined. We investigated the role of nicotinamide N‐methyltransferase (NNMT) in CAFs. Approach & Results: High NNMT expression in CAF tissues was confirmed by western blotting and

Social groups buffer maternal loss in mountain gorillas

open access: yeseLife, 2021
Mothers are crucial for mammals’ survival before nutritional independence, but many social mammals reside with their mothers long after. In these species the social adversity caused by maternal loss later in life can dramatically reduce fitness. However,

Engineering Approaches to Modify Immunomodulatory Functions of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (MSCs): Tissue Regeneration and Clinical Application

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) show promise for treating immune‐related disorders through immunomodulation and tissue regeneration. This review gives a brief overview of current clinical approval of MSC therapies. It also discussed how bioengineering, including genetic modification, biomaterial delivery, extracellular vesicles, and iPSC‐derived MSCs,

Early maternal loss leads to short- but not long-term effects on diurnal cortisol slopes in wild chimpanzees

open access: yeseLife, 2021
The biological embedding model (BEM) suggests that fitness costs of maternal loss arise when early-life experience embeds long-term alterations to hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity.

ORPHANED PROTOSTARS [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2010
We explore the origin of a population of distant companions (~1000 - 5000 AU) to Class I protostellar sources recently found by Connelley and co-workers, who noted that the companion fraction diminished as the sources evolved. Here we present N-body simulations of unstable triple systems embedded in dense cloud cores.
