Primary cultures of chick osteocytes retain functional gap junctions between osteocytes and between osteocytes and osteoblasts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The inaccessibility of osteocytes due to their embedment in the calcified bone matrix in vivo has precluded direct demonstration that osteocytes use gap junctions as a means of intercellular communication.

Composer: Visual Cohort Analysis of Patient Outcomes [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
Objective: Visual cohort analysis utilizing electronic health record data has become an important tool in clinical assessment of patient outcomes. In this paper, we introduce Composer, a visual analysis tool for orthopedic surgeons to compare changes in physical functions of a patient cohort following various spinal procedures.

Osseointegrated prostheses for rehabilitation following amputation : The pioneering Swedish model. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The direct attachment of osseointegrated (OI) prostheses to the skeleton avoids the inherent problems of socket suspension. It also provides physiological weight bearing, improved range of motion in the proximal joint, as well as osseoperceptive sensory ...

Orthopedic workforce planning in Germany – an analysis of orthopedic accessibility

open access: yesPLOS ONE, 2017
In Germany, orthopedic workforce planning relies on population-to-provider-ratios represented by the 'official degree of care provision'. However, with geographic information systems (GIS), more sophisticated measurements are available. By utilizing GIS-based technologies we analyzed the current state of demand and supply of the orthopedic workforce in

Improvement in corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of AZ31 magnesium alloy by NH+2 ions [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Magnesium alloys have been considered to be favorable biodegradable metallic materials used in orthopedic and cardiovascular applications. We introduce NH+2 to the AZ31 Mg alloy surface by ion implantation at the energy of 50 KeV with doses ranging from 1e16 ions/cm2 to 1e17 ions/cm2 to improve its corrosion resistance and biocompatibility.
