The incidence of orthostatic intolerance after bariatric surgery

open access: yesObesity Science & Practice, 2019
Every year, over 200 000 individuals undergo bariatric surgery for the treatment of extreme obesity in the United States. Several retrospective studies describe the occurrence of orthostatic intolerance (OI) syndrome after bariatric surgery. However, the

Heart-Lung Interactions in Aerospace Medicine [PDF]

open access: yes
Few of the heart-lung interactions that are discussed have been studied in any detail in the aerospace environment, but is seems that many such interactions must occur in the setting of altered accelerative loadings and pressure breathing.

Effect of Sustained Human Centrifugation on Autonomic Cardiovascular and Vestibular Function [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Repeated exposure to +Gz enhances human baroreflex responsiveness and improves tolerance to cardiovascular stress. However, both sustained exposure to +Gx and changes in otolith function resulting from the gravitational changes of space flight and ...

A Tick of the Clock: Finding the Sweet Spot in Tilt Table Test. The Effectiveness of Short‐Duration Head‐Up Tilt Test as a Diagnostic Tool in Suspected Vasovagal Patients: A Retrospective Observational Study in a Tertiary Syncope Unit

open access: yesJournal of Arrhythmia, Volume 41, Issue 5, October 2025.
In patients with suspected vasovagal syncope, a 15‐min head‐up tilt test protocol yielded similar diagnostic results to the conventional 20‐min protocol. This shorter approach may improve patient comfort and syncope unit efficiency without compromising diagnostic accuracy.

Risk of Orthostatic Intolerance During Re-Exposure to Gravity [PDF]

open access: yes
Post-spaceflight orthostatic intolerance remains a significant concern to NASA. In Space Shuttle missions, astronauts wore anti-gravity suits and liquid cooling garments to protect against orthostatic intolerance during re-entry and landing, but in ...

Factor analytic reduction of the carotid-cardiac baroreflex parameters [PDF]

open access: yes
An accepted method for measuring the responsiveness of the carotid-cardiac baroreflex to arterial pressure changes is to artificially stimulate the baroreceptors in the neck.

A model for plasma volume changes during short duration spaceflight [PDF]

open access: yes
It is well established that plasma volume decreases during spaceflight and simulated weightlessness (bedrest). The decrement in plasma volume is thought to contribute to the orthostatic intolerance that has been observed in some crew members following ...
