Cardiovascular Health in Women—Across the Lifespan

open access: yesClinical Endocrinology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of mortality and morbidity among women worldwide. However, CVD continues to be perceived as a predominantly male issue. CVD in women therefore remains understudied, underrecognized and undertreated.

Reduced cardiovagal baroreflex sensitivity is associated with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and pain chronification in patients with headache

open access: yesFrontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2023
BackgroundNon-cephalgic symptoms including orthostatic intolerance, fatigue, and cognitive impairment, are common in patients with chronic headache disorders and may result from alterations in the autonomic nervous system.

Orthostatic hypertension: An underestimated cause of orthostatic intolerance

open access: yesClinical Neurophysiology, 2016
To investigate the frequency and mechanism of orthostatic hypertension (OHT) in patients with orthostatic intolerance. We retrospectively reviewed 1033 consecutive case series of orthostatic intolerance that underwent autonomic function tests including a head-up tilt test. OHT was defined as a paradoxical orthostatic increase in systolic blood pressure (

Central nervous system involvement in cardiac amyloidosis: Redefining the heart‐brain axis

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Clinical Investigation, EarlyView.
Central nervous system involvement in cardiac amyloidosis. Amyloidosis is a systemic disease that can directly affect the central nervous system. Furthermore, the amyloid cardiomyopathy can indirectly affect the central nervous system by inducing systemic hypoperfusion and increasing the risk of acute ischaemic stroke.

Orthostatic intolerance and presyncopal states in young adults

open access: yesJournal of Education, Health and Sport
Introduction and purpose: Orthostatic intolerance is an increasingly recognized disturbance of circulatory regulation in young adults, particularly in academic settings where characteristic lifestyle patterns promote autonomic imbalance. The aim of this

Diabetic gastroenteropathy: Associations between gastrointestinal symptoms, motility, and extraintestinal autonomic measures

open access: yesNeurogastroenterology &Motility, EarlyView.
We found no associations between gastrointestinal and extraintestinal measures of diabetic autonomic neuropathy. Nonetheless, gastrointestinal symptoms increased with the severity of cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy and were associated with gastrointestinal measures.

A numerical model to assess deconditioning of the cardiovascular system in long-term exposure to microgravity. Verification and simulation of Mars mission scenarios [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Numerical simulations of the cardiovascular system are particularly important in scenarios where it is difficult to experiment different weightlessness exposure conditions.

Postural tachycardia during head-up tilt test predicts persistent orthostatic intolerance in young adults

open access: yesZdravniški Vestnik, 2013
Background: Head-up tilt (HUT) test is an important tool in establishing the cause of past syncope. As postural tachycardia is associated with orthostatic intolerance, we hypothesise that heart rate (HR) increase during the early phase of HUT can be used

Low Sensitivity of Abbreviated Tilt Table Testing for Diagnosing Postural Tachycardia Syndrome in Adults With ME/CFS

open access: yesFrontiers in Pediatrics, 2018
Introduction: Orthostatic intolerance is common among individuals with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). In some ME/CFS case definitions, orthostatic intolerance is considered a core feature of the disorder.

Effect of artificial gravity on calcaneal bone marrow adipose tissue and mineral content in female and male participants in 60 days of bed rest

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Modulation of bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT) with prolonged inactivity was reported in haemopoietic but not in non‐haemopoietic bones. This prospective randomized controlled trial submitted 16 men and 8 women to 60 days of 6° head‐down‐tilt bed rest.
