Applications of Orthotropic Decks in Bridge Rehabilitation
Engineering Journal, 1987A bridge deck, subject to direct loading by heavy truck wheels and exposed to weather effects, is the most severely stressed structural element of a bridge. The static and dynamic effects of the moving wheel loads and the high ratio of live to dead load cause a wide range of alternating stresses in the deck.

Steel Orthotropic Decks: Developments in the 1990s
Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 1999Recent developments in the field of steel orthotropic decks, which made possible the design of several recently completed highway bridges with record-breaking spans, are summarized. The more efficient, but fatigue sensitive, decks with closed ribs were prevalently used.

Orthotropic Steel Plates for Bridge Deck Replacement
1990A large number of our nation's bridges have reached the age where serious deterioration requires replacement of the roadway deck. Where first cost is the determining factor, replacement in kind—usually reinforced concrete—is the normally accepted method.
