BEHAVIOUR OF YOUNG RHINOCEROS BEETLES, ORYCTES RHINOCEROS
Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, 1975The behaviour of young adults of Oryctes rhinoceros was studied. In the field the young beetles remained at the site of pupation for 3—4 weeks after the adult moult. In the laboratory 3‐week‐old females and 5‐week‐oId males were able to mate before the first feeding and before the first flight.

Abstract The incidence and distribution of the baculovirus of the coconut palm rhinoceros beetle was determined in Tongatapu, Tonga, 7 years after being first introduced. Surveys showed the virus to be spread throughout the beetle population, affecting 14.6% of breeding sites and over 84% of all adult beetles taken.

O. rhinoceros adults became infected with the virus when kept in a mixture of sawdust and ground-up virus-killed larvae or together with other virus-infected adults.

Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry, 2009Discontinuous gas exchange cycles (DGCs) are frequently observed with insects, i.e. oxygen take up and carbon dioxide release occur interrupted by periods of a few minutes up to many hours. The paper presents direct and indirect calorimetric experiments on DGCs of the scarabid rhinoceros beetle Oryctes nasicornis.

A novel antifungal peptide, scarabaecin (4080Da), was isolated from the coconut rhinoceros beetle, Oryctes rhinoceros. Scarabaecin cDNA was cloned by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reactions (RT-PCR) using a primer based on the N-terminal amino acid sequence. The amino acid sequence deduced from scarabaecin cDNA showed no significant similarity

Biological Control of Oryctes Rhinoceros (L.) Using an Indian Isolate of Oryctes Baculovirus
International Journal of Tropical Insect Science, 1993Oryctes rhinoceros beetles were infected with an Indian isolate of Oryctes baculovirus and released into the wild population of O. rhinoceros in Minicoy island (India) for the biological suppression of rhinoceros beetle. The virus disease had established itself within 9 months and suppressed the pest population to low levels.

Infection is peroral. The virus multiplies in the digestive system and other organs. Dying larvae contaminate breeding sites with virus.
