1952Since the beginning of the present century, many workers have been interested in various aspects of insect nutrition. The early investigators were interested in the effects of bacterial action and consequently were led to investigate the effect of sterilization of both the experimental animals and the dietary substrate.

Lysine requirements of larvae of Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.) (Coleoptera, Silvanidae)
Journal of Insect Physiology, 1961Abstract Larvae of the saw-toothed grain beetle, Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.), survived in greater numbers and developed quicker as the concentration of l-lysine in the diet increased from 0 to 1·37 per cent. At higher concentrations the number surviving and the rate of growth decreased.

Journal of Stored Products Research, 1989Abstract Rates of survival and development of immature stages, and survival and fertility of adults of four field populations and two laboratory strains of Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.) were compared. Population parameters of the field populations were generally similar, although one had a lower fertility rate.

Journal of Stored Products Research, 1982Abstract Rolled oats and pentane extracts of rolled oats were attractive to the adult Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.) when tested in a Y-tube olfactometer. Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.) survived in greater numbers when guanine and cytosine were added to a synthetic diet at a concentration of 0.4 mg/g each than when yeast RNA was included in the diet at 5.0 mg/g. They developed as quickly on this diet as when yeast RNA was added to the basic diet.

AMINO ACID REQUIREMENTS OF ORYZAEPHILUS SURINAMENSIS (L.) (COLEOPTERA: SILVANIDAE) FOR PUPATION
Canadian Journal of Zoology, 1956A racemic mixture of alanine in the diet was deleterious to Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.) in the concentration used. Cystine, arginine, and proline were also harmful and the adverse effect of alanine may have been partially reduced by their removal from the diet.
