Cavitating Multiphase Flow over Oscillating Hydrofoils

44th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit, 2006
*† ‡ Many maritime applications involve the use of dynamically moving hydrofoils. Numerical simulations using Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations are carried out to analyze the effect of cavitation on the dynamic stall of an oscillating hydrofoil. It was found that the flow physics changes considerably with cavitation.

Unsteady attached cavitation on an oscillating hydrofoil

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1988
A series of visualizations of non-cavitating and cavitating unsteady flows around an oscillating hydrofoil has been carried out in order to investigate the effect of unsteadiness on attached cavitation. The major conclusion of the present experimental analysis is that the strong interaction that was previously pointed out in the case of steady ...

Fluid–structure coupling for an oscillating hydrofoil

Journal of Fluids and Structures, 2010
Abstract Fluid-structure investigations in hydraulic machines using coupled simulations are particularly time-consuming. In this study, an alternative method is presented that linearizes the hydrodynamic load of a rigid, oscillating hydrofoil. The hydrofoil, which is surrounded by incompressible, turbulent flow, is modeled with forced and free ...

The Design of Oscillating Hydrofoil Current Generation Device

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2015
The oscillating hydrofoil current generation device utilizes a typical movement type, which can transform energy effectively from current. The study shows that the geometrical profile of blades is the fundamental factor to the efficiency. In order to resolve the problem, this paper adapt the BEM(blade elements momentum) theory, which plays an important

Generating controllable velocity fluctuations using twin oscillating hydrofoils

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2012
AbstractAn experiment apparatus has been previously developed with the ability to independently control the instantaneous flow velocity in a water flume. This configuration, which uses two pitching hydrofoils to generate the flow fluctuations, allows the unsteady response of submerged structures to be studied over a wide range of driving frequencies ...

Energy extraction performance of motion-constrained tandem oscillating hydrofoils

Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy, 2017
An energy extraction technology based on motion-constrained tandem oscillating hydrofoils is presented in this paper. The turbine for extracting energy from the flow field is designed and built based on the measured frequency and energy extraction performance analysis of motion-constrained tandem oscillating hydrofoils. The instantaneous rotating speed

Behaviors of two semi-passive oscillating hydrofoils with a tandem configuration

Energy, 2021
Abstract Two hydrofoils with a tandem spatial configuration can share the same flow window. The wake vortex interaction and blockage effect have noticeable impacts on the response of two hydrofoils for a semi-passive system. In this study, the responses of two oscillating hydrofoils with a tandem arrangement are examined using a numerical approach ...

Optimum propulsion of an oscillating hydrofoil

IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, 1966
A study is made on the optimization aspect of marine propulsion in the light of optimum control theory for distributed parameter systems. In particular, the problem of determining the motion of a thin hydrofoil or a "thin fish" to maximize the average thrust in the presence of instantaneous or average power limitation constraint is considered ...

Testing and Analysis of an Oscillating Hydrofoils Turbine Concept

ASME 2010 3rd Joint US-European Fluids Engineering Summer Meeting: Volume 1, Symposia – Parts A, B, and C, 2010
A new concept of hydrokinetic turbine using oscillating hydrofoils to extract energy from water currents (tidal or gravitational) is presented, tested and analyzed in the present investigation. Due to its rectangular extraction plane, this technology is particularly well suited for river beds and shallow waters near the coasts. The present turbine is a
