Oscillatory thermocapillary flows

Advances in Space Research, 1993
Abstract Oscillatory thermocapillary flows are experimentally investigated for half-zone, floating-zone, rectangular, and cylindrical configurations for a variety of operating conditions. The onset conditions for oscillations, free-surface temperature distributions and flow structures are determined and compared to indicate the differences among them.

Regime of Oscillatory Flow

Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Engineering, 1985
A regime of flow is defined as the transition from laminar to turbulent flow which is an inception of turbulence in the flow field. Knowledge of flow regime provides useful information for quantitative description of flow and its analysis. It also serves as the lower limit of sediment transport.

Transient and Oscillatory Granular Shear Flow

Physical Review Letters, 2004
The forces and particle motion during transient and oscillatory shear of granular material are investigated experimentally. In a shear cell of Taylor-Couette-type we find that how a granular shear flow starts depends strongly on the prior shear direction.

Stochastic resonance for dispersion in oscillatory flows

Physical Review A, 1991
We discuss the dispersion of particles suspended in time-periodic flows. It is found that this dispersion becomes maximal if the stochastic process describing the intrinsic random motion of the suspended particles is in ``resonance'' with the time-periodic flow.

Oscillatory Flow Theory

2010
The pressure-flow relation for steady flow, where only frictional losses are considered (resistance, law of Poiseuille), and the relation between oscillatory or pulsatile pressure and flow when only blood mass (inertance) is taken into consideration, are simplifications of reality.

The Stability of Oscillatory Hagen-Poiseuille Flow

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1986
The linear stability theory of the nonzero mean, sinusoidally oscillating flow in a tube of circular cross section is examined. It is found that the relevant axisymmetric disturbances in the oscillatory flow are more stable (i.e., have larger decay rates) than the axisymmetric disturbances of the mean flow alone.

Oscillatory Magnetogasdynamics Slip Flow in a Microchannel

48th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting Including the New Horizons Forum and Aerospace Exposition, 2010
The problem of pressure-driven magnetogasdynamic (MGD) slip flow with small rarefaction through a long microchannel is considered. The flow is driven by a steady or oscillatory pressure gradient. The study of MGD flows in microchannels is of interest since they occur in many electromagnetic microscale devices. In obtaining the microfluidic solutions in

Oscillatory Granular Flows

1998
An experimental device has been used to examine the behavior of granular materials under vertical, horizontal and combined bi-axial vibrations. Different container geometries were used with glass spheres, millet and lentils as granular media. Frontal and lateral visualization of the flow was made possible with high-speed video cameras.

Transport in oscillatory flows

2008
We examine the degree to which the transport of a passive scalar contaminant is enhanced by an oscillatory cellular flow. The enhancement is found to depend on the Peclet number Pe and on the ratio η of the oscillation frequency to the shear rate.
