Comparison of the Coating Structure of Silicon‐Based PECVD Coatings With Varying Organic Content

open access: yesPlasma Processes and Polymers, EarlyView.
Silicon‐based PECVD coatings transition abruptly from organic SiOCH to oxidic SiOx at ~32 at% silicon, exhibiting threshold behavior in barrier performance. Chemical composition seems to dominate over porosity: SiOx coatings unexpectedly show higher porosity yet superior barrier properties, possibly due to rigid cage‐like molecular structures ...

Black holes from large N singlet models

open access: yesJournal of High Energy Physics, 2018
The emergent nature of spacetime geometry and black holes can be directly probed in simple holographic duals of higher spin gravity and tensionless string theory.

Pattern and repeatability of ascarid-specific antigen excretion through chicken faeces, and the diagnostic accuracy of coproantigen measurements as compared with McMaster egg counts and plasma and egg yolk antibody measurements in laying hens

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2023
Background A coproantigen enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) has recently been proposed for detecting ascarid infections in chickens. The excretion pattern of ascarid antigens through chicken faeces and the consistency of measurements over the ...

“Being Nice” as Modus Vivendi in Classrooms: A Collective Behavior Approach to Deviant Behavior in Primary Schools

open access: yesSymbolic Interaction, EarlyView.
This study of first‐year primary school draws on Goffman's concept of “collective behavior” to examine how order is established and disrupted through the mutual adjustment of all participants' actions. We employed a multi‐method longitudinal design, using semi‐standardized observations and qualitative interviews with teachers and children at three ...

Distance of movement in three threatened butterfly species

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
Multi‐year mark–recapture analysis using net displacement and Cormack–Jolly–Seber models shows similar daily detectability (0.17–0.22) among species, supporting robust interspecific comparisons. Dispersal kernels differ: lognormal best for Euphydryas aurinia and Parnassius apollo, exponential for Phengaris arion; P.

Pedagogical Translanguaging for Epistemic Inclusion: Scaffolding Strategies in Bilingual Subject Instruction in Norway

open access: yesInternational Journal of Applied Linguistics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Bilingual subject instruction (BSI) is one form of language support classes in Norwegian schools, preparing students from language minorities for mainstream instruction by combining subject and language tutoring through the students’ home language.

Functional equivalence of germ plasm organizers. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Genetics, 2018
The proteins Oskar (Osk) in Drosophila and Bucky ball (Buc) in zebrafish act as germ plasm organizers. Both proteins recapitulate germ plasm activities but seem to be unique to their animal groups.

Developmental expression of Ap‐Vas proteins in aphids and flies reveals their evolutionary roles in insects

open access: yesInsect Molecular Biology, EarlyView.
Duplication of vas genes is universally observed in aphids, and phylogenetic analysis indicates that this event predates the divergence of Aphididae and Phylloxeridae. Ap‐vas1 is germline‐specific, whereas Ap‐vas2–4 exhibit somatic expression, indicating functional divergence during aphid embryogenesis.

Integrated routing of heavy electrical and diesel trucks in forest transports

open access: yesInternational Transactions in Operational Research, EarlyView.
Abstract Fossil‐free forestry transports are important to reach climate goals. In Sweden, road transports account for around 50% of the industry's CO2 emissions and almost 20% of the road freight volumes. Previous studies have shown that electrification is a cost‐effective way for carbon abatement, while at the same time the requirements for ...
