Strike Behavior and Behavioral Responses to Retrieval by Northern Pike (Esox lucius) During Ice Angling

open access: yesFisheries Management and Ecology, Volume 33, Issue 1, Page 119-133, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Behavior of fish during catch and release has not been well studied despite its potential importance for fish conservation and welfare. We used underwater video footage to examine behaviors of ice‐angled northern pike (Esox lucius) during approach and retrieval.

Pleistocene fishes (Coregonus, Osmerus, Microgadus, Gasterosteus) from Green Creek, Ontario, Canada

open access: yes, 1981
Specimens of Coregonus cf. artedii and Microgadus tomcod are reported for the first time from calcareous nodules at Green Creek. The occurrence of Osmerus mordax and fully plated Gasterosteus aculeatus in these nodules is confirmed.

Gonadal Maturation of Female Rainbow Smelt Osmerus eperlanus mordax in Funka Bay, Hokkaido [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
Rainbow smelt Osmerus eperlanus mordax, were collected during May 1993 to April 1995 from Funka Bay, Hokkaido, and the Yamazaki and Rukotsu rivers, which flow into the western side of the bay.

Status Assessments for Two Endangered Populations of Vendace (Coregonus albula) and Evidence That Their Abundance Is Modulated by Percid Fishes

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 36, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT The study of low‐latitude populations can inform our understanding of how cold‐adapted species might respond to environmental change. The vendace (Coregonus albula) is a lacustrine fish that is distributed across northern Europe. In the UK, there are two extant native vendace populations.

Long-term effects of extreme weather events and eutrophication on the fish community of shallow Lake Peipsi (Estonia/Russia)

open access: yesJournal of Limnology, 2013
The fish kill in lake Peipsi (Estonia/Russia) during the extraordinarily hot summer of 2010 evoked an investigation into the effects of environmental extremes and long-term eutrophication on the fish community of the lake.

The Seasonal Rhythms of Coastal eDNA: Insights Into Biodiversity and Regional Detection Patterns

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 8, Issue 1, January–February 2026.
Seasonal variation affects environmental DNA (eDNA) detection, yet its influence on species monitoring remains underexplored. This study examines eDNA detection windows across taxa, primers, and regions, finding that most species have short detection periods (1–2 months) that vary with taxonomy and primer choice. These results underscore the importance

Seasonal and Local Variations in Odd-Chain Fatty Acid Levels in Nova Scotian Rainbow Smelt (Osmerus mordax)

open access: yes, 1973
Odd-chain fatty acid (OCFA) levels in rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax) from Jeddore Harbour, N.S., showed a pronounced seasonal variation during the period from spring 1969 to fall 1970, reaching a maximum of 20% total fatty acids in the January–March ...

Bioassays of the calcium-depleted or -supplemented Osmerus eperlanus parvalbumins.

open access: yes, 2012
The chemoattractivity of the purified parvalbumins was assessed according to a standard “all-or-none” snake bioassay based on a non-biological lure coated with the tested sample as in [9].

Thermal acclimation in rainbow smelt, Osmerus mordax, leads to faster myotomal muscle contractile properties and improved swimming performance

open access: yesBiology Open, 2013
Summary Rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax) display an impressive ability to acclimate to very cold water temperatures. These fish express both anti-freeze proteins and glycerol in their plasma, liver, muscle and other tissues to avoid freezing at sub-zero ...
