ABSTRACT Aquatic ecosystems have been in an alarming state of decline for decades. In particular, estuarine ecosystems have experienced long‐term declines in fish diversity due to factors such as habitat degradation, pollution and altered hydrology. Monitoring these systems is often limited by the difficulty and cost of conventional survey methods.

ABSTRACT Seasonal changes in freshwater ecosystems influence fish resource use through both environmental and biological factors, but year‐round studies that include ice‐covered months have been lacking. We investigated seasonal variation in the stable isotope ratios of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) using year‐round monthly sampling of the fish ...

Hydroacoustic acquisition was performed by means of two different single beam systems, the Simradmodel EK15 from 2015 and the Simrad model EY-M from the 1980s to explore potential differences of fish density and target strength (TS) distribution between ...

Protecting a threatened coastal fish species through regional collaboration [PDF]
Rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax) are small anadromous fish that live in nearshore coastal waters during much of the year and migrate to tidal rivers to spawn during the spring.

We measured a positive linear relationship between eDNA concentration and abundance for larval Delta Smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus) with N = 1 larva exceeding the limit of detection for the novel qPCR assay. Field experiments quantified the probability of detection for eDNA sampling methods at known abundances and distances from source. ABSTRACT Rare

A Conceptual Framework and Methods for Studying the Connectivity of Fishes
ABSTRACT Connectivity is a multifaceted concept that has important implications for the management and conservation of marine and freshwater fishes. We developed a conceptual framework that encompasses multiple, interrelated categories of connectedness, including landscape (e.g., structural, functional) connectivity and ecological (e.g., trophic ...

The restoration of the once abundant Cisco (Coregonus artedi) is a management interest across the Laurentian Great Lakes. To inform the restoration, we (1) described historical distributions of Cisco and (2) explored whether non-indigenous Rainbow Smelt (

ABSTRACT Commercial fishing is often assumed to have greater impacts than recreational fishing, and many fisheries assessments overlook the latter. Yet, numerous coastal and freshwater fish populations are subject to both fishing types and environmental pressures, all influencing biomass, body size and community structure and making management outcomes
