A STUDY OF OSMIUM TETROXIDE FIXATION [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Histochemistry & Cytochemistry, 1968
The specific conditions of osmium fixation have been studied on gelatin gels and bovine pancreas. Protein (gelatin)-bound osmium can be quantitated by a modification of the Majumdar and Sen Gupta test, free and tissue (pancreas)-bound osmium by a modified Bahr test.

Lipid fixation during preparation of chloroplasts for electron microscopy

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1968
Reaction of osmium tetroxide with isolated spinach chloroplasts fixed completely the glycolipids, phosphatidyl glycerol, and phosphatidyl choline. Under the same reaction conditions only 30% of the chlorophyll was fixed.Reaction of potassium permanganate

Methods for the determination of adipose cell size in man and animals

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1968
Four methods for the sizing of adipose cells in small samples of human or animal adipose tissue are compared. These methods depend on the preparation of cell suspensions by incubation of the tissue with collagenase or by prolonged fixation with osmium ...

Sharpless Asymmetric Dihydroxylation: An Impressive Gadget for the Synthesis of Natural Products: A Review

open access: yesMolecules, 2023
Sharpless asymmetric dihydroxylation is an important reaction in the enantioselective synthesis of chiral vicinal diols that involves the treatment of alkene with osmium tetroxide along with optically active quinine ligand.

Recycling Osmium Tetroxide [PDF]

open access: yesMicroscopy Today, 2001
Abstract Osmium tetroxide is indeed wonderful stuff. Osmium is a rare element, so disposal of used solutions should consist of recycling, not dumping, even though osmium compounds are not considered environmentally hazardous (Smith et al., 1978 Trace Metal in the Environment, vol 4. Ann Arbor Science Publishers).

Release of carbohydrates from sphingoglycolipid by osmium-catalyzed periodate oxidation followed by treatment with mild alkali

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1966
The carbohydrate moiety of sphingoglycolipid, after preliminary acetylation, can be released by periodate oxidation catalyzed by a trace amount of osmium tetroxide, followed by alkaline treatment.Cerebroside, lactosyl ceramide, hematoside, globoside, and

Virtual histology of transgenic mouse embryos for high-throughput phenotyping. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Genetics, 2006
A bold new effort to disrupt every gene in the mouse genome necessitates systematic, interdisciplinary approaches to analyzing patterning defects in the mouse embryo. We present a novel, rapid, and inexpensive method for obtaining high-resolution virtual
