Comprehensive Evaluation of Bisphenol A Toxicity Reveals Neurobehavioral, Metabolic, and Reproductive Impairments in Girardia tigrina

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Bisphenol A (BPA), a common industrial chemical used in plastics and consumer products, is increasingly detected in aquatic environments, raising serious concerns about its potential ecological impacts. This study evaluated the sublethal and acute toxic effects of BPA on the freshwater planarian Girardia tigrina, a recognized model for ...

Renal Responses to the Changes in Volume and Osmolar Concentration of Extracellular Fluid

open access: yes, 1972
Sixty-six healthy medical students were divided into 5 groups and induced the changes in volume and/or osmolar concentration of extracellular fluid: The first group (water group) ingested 1.000ml water; The second group (saline group) ingested 1.000

Induction of deletion mutation on ompR gene of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi isolates from asymptomatic typhoid carriers to evolve attenuated strains for vaccine development

open access: yes, 2014
ObjectiveTo develop attenuated strains of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (S. typhi) for the candidate vaccine by osmolar stress.MethodsS. typhi SS3 and SS5 strains were isolated from asymptomatic typhoid carriers in Namakkal, Tamil Nadu, India.

Nonthermal plasma approaches for combating implant‐associated infections: A compendious review

open access: yesVIEW, EarlyView.
Implant‐associated infections pose serious clinical challenges. Non‐thermal plasma (NTP) modifications overcome this bottleneck in distinct ways relative to traditional sterilization methods. Gas‐phase plasmas generate highly energetic species, UV radiation and reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (RONS), which alter the implant surface properties.

Twenty‐Five Years of the Environmental Stress Response and the Enduring Power of Yeast in Stress Biology

open access: yesYeast, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT All organisms must be able to sense and respond to adverse environments, especially those that threaten cellular integrity. The age of genomics clarified the breadth and specificity of cellular stress responses, including in free‐living microbes directly exposed to a changing environment.

Absorption of lactose from colon of newborn piglet

open access: yes, 1991
Piglets in three age groups (1-3, 9-11, and 16-25 days after birth) were used for in vivo colonic perfusions. Studies compared an isosmolar (312 mosM) with a high osmolar (551 mosM) solution and two equimolar substrates (with hexose concentrations of 73.

Sensory Biology of the Franciscana (Pontoporia blainvillei, Pontoporiidae, Cetartiodactyla): Ontogenetic Modifications of Vibrissae and Vibrissal Crypts

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
The transition of cetaceans from a terrestrial to an aquatic environment involved a crucial sensory adaptation to environments with limited visibility. Vibrissae, important mechanoreceptors, undergo an ontogenetic transformation in odontocetes. This research describes the histomorphology of vibrissae and crypts at different developmental stages ...

Evidence for a lipid specific effect in nutrient induced human proximal gastric relaxation

open access: yes, 1998
Background/Aim - The presence of lipid in the upper gut is able to modify gastrointestinal motor performance, but its influence on the relaxation of the human stomach, which is known to modify gastric emptying, remains incompletely understood.
