Forward Osmosis for Metal Processing Effluents under Similar Osmotic Pressure Gradients

open access: yesMembranes, 2023
Water recovery from aqueous effluents in the mining and metals processing industry poses a unique challenge due to the high concentration of dissolved salts typically requiring energy intensive methods of treatment. Forward osmosis (FO) is a lower energy

Molecular bases of circadian magnesium rhythms across eukaryotes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Circadian rhythms in intracellular [Mg2+] exist across eukaryotic kingdoms. Central roles for Mg2+ in metabolism suggest that Mg2+ rhythms could regulate daily cellular energy and metabolism. In this Perspective paper, we propose that ancestral prokaryotic transport proteins could be responsible for mediating Mg2+ rhythms and posit a feedback model ...

Potential therapeutic targeting of BKCa channels in glioblastoma treatment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review summarizes current insights into the role of BKCa and mitoBKCa channels in glioblastoma biology, their potential classification as oncochannels, and the emerging pharmacological strategies targeting these channels, emphasizing the translational challenges in developing BKCa‐directed therapies for glioblastoma treatment.

Practical Osmotic Agent for High-Degree Pharmaceutical Pre-Concentration by Organic Solvent Forward Osmosis

open access: yesMembranes
Pre-concentration can reduce the total production costs in the pharmaceutical industry. Organic solvent forward osmosis (OSFO) is a suitable pre-concentration method because of its nonthermal nature, low capital cost, and potential for achieving high ...

ATF4‐mediated stress response as a therapeutic vulnerability in chordoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We screened 5 chordoma cell lines against 100+ inhibitors of epigenetic and metabolic pathways and kinases and identified halofuginone, a tRNA synthetase inhibitor. Mechanistically halofuginone induces an integrated stress response, with eIF2alpha phosphorylation, activation of ATF4 and its target genes CHOP, ASNS, INHBE leading to cell death ...

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Changes in Immune‐Inflammation Status and Acute Ischemic Stroke Prognosis in Prospective Cohort

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Inflammation is a critical risk factor for poor outcomes in cerebral infarction. Prior studies focused primarily on baseline inflammation status, neglecting dynamic longitudinal changes. We try to investigate the association between immune‐inflammation status alterations and stroke prognosis, and evaluated three systemic biomarkers'

Concentration of ‘Oblachinska’ sour cherry juice using osmotic distillation

open access: yesInternational Journal of Horticultural Science, 2012
Sour cherry is one of the most famous and characteristic Hungarian fruit what is also commonly used in food production as a colour additive. The sour cherry cultivar, ‘Oblachinska’ was shown to be a rich source of antioxidant compounds, including mainly ...

PINEAPPLE JUICE CONCENTRATED BY OSMOTIC EVAPORATION1

open access: yesJournal of Food Quality, 2002
AbstractPasteurized pineapple juice was concentrated by osmotic evaporation to produce a 51 d̀Brix concentrate that was reconstituted to single strength juice for evaluation. Headspace gas chromatography (HSGC) showed that the concentrate retained an average of 62% of the volatile components present in the initial juice.

Functional and Structural Evidence of Neurofluid Circuit Aberrations in Huntington Disease

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Disrupted neurofluid regulation may contribute to neurodegeneration in Huntington disease (HD). Because neurofluid pathways influence waste clearance, inflammation, and the distribution of central nervous system (CNS)–delivered therapeutics, understanding their dysfunction is increasingly important as targeted treatments emerge.
