Osmotic pressure between arbitrarily charged surfaces: a revisited approach [PDF]

open access: yesEur. Phys. J. E 41, 11 (2018), 2017
The properties of ionic solutions between charged surfaces are often studied within the Poisson-Boltzmann framework, by finding the electrostatic potential profile. For example, the osmotic pressure between two charged planar surfaces can be evaluated by solving coupled equations for the electrostatic potential and osmotic pressure.

Donnan Equilibrium Revisited: Coupling between Ion Concentrations, Osmotic Pressure, and Donnan Potential [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
This paper discusses the little-known fact that Donnan's equilibrium criteria established over 100 years ago neglected the coupling between ion concentrations and the osmotic pressure. Such coupling can be treated based on general thermodynamic considerations including the solvent equilibrium, leading to a membrane potential that consists of not only ...

Osmotic and diffusio-osmotic flow generation at high solute concentration. II. Molecular dynamics simulations [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Chemical Physics 146, 194702 (2017), 2017
In this paper, we explore osmotic transport by means of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We first consider osmosis through a membrane, and investigate the reflection coefficient of an imperfectly semi-permeable membrane, in the dilute and high concentration regimes.

ON THE OSMOTIC CONCENTRATION OF THE TISSUE FLUIDS OF PHANEROGAMIC EPIPHYTES

open access: greenAmerican Journal of Botany, 1918
The purpose of this paper, which is one of a series dealing with the problem of the physico-chemical properties of vegetable saps in relation to environmental factors and to geographical distribution, is to present the results of three series of determinations of the osmotic concentration of the tissue fluids of phanerogamic epiphytes, and to compare ...

A stepwise emergence of evolution in the RNA world

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
How did biological evolution emerge from chemical reactions? This perspective proposes a gradual scenario of self‐organization among RNA molecules, where catalytic feedback on random mixtures plays the central role. Short oligomers cross‐ligate, and self‐assembly enables heritable variations. An event of template‐externalization marks the transition to

Theoretical Framework for Microscopic Osmotic Phenomena [PDF]

open access: yesAPS Phys. Rev. E, 75, 1, (2007), 2009
The basic ingredients of osmotic pressure are a solvent fluid with a soluble molecular species which is restricted to a chamber by a boundary which is permeable to the solvent fluid but impermeable to the solute molecules. For macroscopic systems at equilibrium, the osmotic pressure is given by the classical van't Hoff Law, which states that the ...

Boundaries of photosynthesis: adaptations of carbon fixation in extreme environments

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Photosynthesis faces challenges from environmental extremes of temperature, pH, and salinity, limiting gas diffusion, modifying membrane fluidity, and destabilizing photochemical and biochemical reactions. Photosynthetic organisms have evolved unique adaptations overcoming these stresses and maintaining their photosynthetic activity.

Generic transport coefficients of a confined electrolyte solution [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. E 90, 052113 (2014), 2014
Physical parameters characterising electrokinetic transport in a confined electrolyte solution are reconstructed from the generic transport coefficients obtained within the classical non-equilibrium statistical thermodynamic framework. The electro-osmotic flow, the diffusio-osmotic flow, the osmotic current, as well as the pressure-driven Poiseuille ...
