Osmotic distillation with propylene glycol, glycerol and glycerol–salt mixtures

Journal of Membrane Science, 2004
Abstract Aqueous solutions of propylene glycol (PG), glycerol and glycerol–salt mixtures are investigated as alternative to calcium chloride, normally employed to concentrate aqueous mixtures by osmotic distillation (OD). These extractants can overcome the problems of corrosion and scaling associated with the use of brines.

Osmotic MD and other membrane distillation variants

Journal of Membrane Science, 2005
A literature survey concerning the osmotic membrane distillation was presented. This process is discussed and compared with other types of membrane distillation, particularly with direct-contact membrane distillation. A critical evaluation of the process principles and parameters was included in this literature review.

Concentration and temperature polarization effects during osmotic membrane distillation

Journal of Membrane Science, 2008
Abstract Pineapple juice is one of the popular fruit juice due to its pleasant aroma and flavor. Concentration of clarified pineapple juice was carried out by osmotic membrane distillation in a plate and frame membrane module. Concentration and temperature polarization effects are found to have significant role on flux reduction during osmotic ...

Pomegranate juice concentration using osmotic distillation with membrane contactor

Separation and Purification Technology, 2019
Abstract This study aims at evaluating the effect of fouling on the performance of polypropylene hollow fiber membrane contactor with feed-in-shell flow configuration for the concentration of pomegranate juice through osmotic distillation (OD). The juice was concentrated to 52.0 ± 0.3°Brix, reaching a maximum flux of 1.053 kg.m−2.h−1 at a temperature

Evolution of quality parameters during red wine dealcoholization by osmotic distillation

Food Chemistry, 2013
Osmotic distillation technique was used for the total dealcoholization of a red wine (Aglianico grape variety) up to 0.19 vol.%. The dealcoholization process was performed in subsequent cycles which gave rise wine samples at different alcoholic degrees.

Effect of Process Parameters on Partial Dealcoholization of Wine by Osmotic Distillation

Food and Bioprocess Technology, 2012
The effectiveness of the osmotic distillation process for partial dealcoholization of wine was investigated in this work. The dealcoholization process was performed using a hollow fibre membrane module and process parameters, such as hydrodynamic conditions, number of cycles, temperature and ethanol content of feed solution were investigated.

Osmotic distillation in agro-food applications

Osmotic distillation (OD), as a low-pressure osmotic-based membrane technology, is a promising approach to selectively extract water from agro-food liquid products and by-products under atmospheric pressure at room temperature, thus avoiding thermal and mechanical damage of the solute.
