Asymmetric membranes for membrane distillation and thermo-osmotic energy conversion

Desalination, 2019
Abstract Asymmetric membranes with a thin, small pore size upper layer have the potential to facilitate a high vapor flux while maintaining high liquid entry pressure, which is critical for membrane distillation (MD) and thermo-osmotic energy conversion (TOEC) processes.

Combined Osmotic and Membrane Distillation for Concentration of Anthocyanin from Muscadine Pomace

Journal of Food Science, 2019
Abstract Bioactive anthocyanins from aqueous extracts of muscadine grape pomace were concentrated using osmotic distillation (OD) and direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) using polypropylene (PP) and poly(ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene) (ECTFE) membranes.

The Role of Operating Conditions in Osmotic Distillation and Direct Contact Membrane Distillation - A Comparative Study

International Journal of Food Engineering, 2006
This paper presents a comparative study on the role of operating conditions in osmotic distillation (OD) and direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD). Comparisons were made for lab scale OD and DCMD experiments on two types of PVDF hollow fibres under similar operating conditions for the concentration of glucose solutions from 30 to 60% (w/w) at ...

Modelling of water transport in osmotic distillation using asymmetric membrane

Journal of Membrane Science, 2000
Abstract Several models commonly employed to represent the mass transfer in osmotic distillation (OD) systems are applied to the results of pure water OD experiments carried out with two commercial asymmetric porous membranes. Molecular and Knudsen diffusion mechanisms are tested to model the vapour transport across the membrane.

Pomegranate juice concentration using osmotic distillation with membrane contactor

Separation and Purification Technology, 2019
Abstract This study aims at evaluating the effect of fouling on the performance of polypropylene hollow fiber membrane contactor with feed-in-shell flow configuration for the concentration of pomegranate juice through osmotic distillation (OD). The juice was concentrated to 52.0 ± 0.3°Brix, reaching a maximum flux of 1.053 kg.m−2.h−1 at a temperature

Hydrophobic membrane evaluation and cleaning for osmotic distillation of tomato puree

Journal of Membrane Science, 1994
Abstract Membrane hydrophobicity was investigated for the osmotic distillation (OD) of tomato puree and membrane cleaning. Membrane hydrophobicity was measured by two methods: penetrating drop concentration (PDC%) for surface tension greater than 23 mN/m and penetration temperature (PT°C) newly developed for membrane surface tension less than 23 mN/m.

Experimental and theoretical study on the effectiveness of vacuum in osmotic membrane distillation

Petroleum Chemistry, 2013
The possibility of creating a vacuum in a membrane and maintaining the vacuum for many days during the osmotic membrane distillation (OMD) process has been experimentally shown. The limiting parameters of OMD with a vacuum have been evaluated as functions of external pressure, temperature, and temperature differential across the membrane. Equations and
