Integrating an aerobic/anoxic osmotic membrane bioreactor with membrane distillation for potable reuse

Desalination, 2018
Abstract A novel osmotic membrane bioreactor-membrane distillation (OMBR-MD) system was designed and fabricated to treat wastewater for potable reuse. Before longer-term operation to evaluate water flux and biological treatment of the pilot-scale OMBR subsystem, two forward osmosis (FO) membranes were evaluated at the bench-scale.

Effect of the operating variables on the extraction and recovery of aroma compounds in an osmotic distillation process coupled to a vacuum membrane distillation system [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Food Engineering, 2012
The coupled operation of osmotic distillation (OD) and vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) for concentration of fruit juices and simultaneous recovery of their aroma compounds was studied.

The problem of membrane characterization for the process of osmotic distillation [PDF]

open access: possibleDesalination, 2001
Abstract The membrane used in the process of osmotic distillation (OD) is often considered passive as it simply provides a support for the vapour—liquid interfaces where evaporation and condensation take place and does not introduce any selectivity. However, the membrane is a major component of the system, not only because it constitutes one of the ...

Mass transfer in osmotic membrane distillation of phycocyanin colorant and sweet-lime juice [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Membrane Science, 2006
Osmotic membrane distillation is a novel membrane process for the removal of water from dilute aqueous solutions, such as liquid foods or natural colors, concentrating them, while retaining the organoleptic and nutritional properties.

New opportunities for osmotic membrane distillation

Membrane Technology, 2006
This article discusses a potential large-scale application for osmotic membrane distillation — a relatively new membrane technology. More specifically, commercial opportunities for the technology are discussed using an example of NaCl brine re-concentration in the chlor-alkali industry.

A comprehensive review of membrane distillation and osmotic distillation in agro-food applications

2020
Membrane distillation (MD) and osmotic distillation (OD) are emerging athermal processing techniques of great interest in agro-food production where the most part of products is sensitive to thermal treatments. With respect to conventional methods, MD and OD are competitive alternatives, able to work in an environmental-friendly and cost-efficient way,

Coupled Phenomena Membrane Distillation and Osmotic Distillation through a Porous Hydrophobic Membrane

Separation Science and Technology, 1995
Abstract Water transport in the vapor phase through a porous hydrophobic membrane has been studied in different experimental situations. Pure water and/or different aqueous solutions of sodium chloride, ranging from 0.5 to 5 mol/L, were employed on both sides of the membrane.

Osmotic distillation through porous hydrophobic membranes

Journal of Membrane Science, 1993
Abstract Osmotic distillation through porous hydrophobic membranes has been studied theoretically and experimentally. In particular the influence of the unstirred diffusion boundary layer has been determined. A model has been develop which describes the contributions of solution concentration and stirring rate.

Effect of membrane wetting on the surface of hydrophobic membranes in Osmotic Distillation

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2019
Non-thermal Osmotic Distillation (OD) technique was used to concentrate pomegranate juice in flat sheet membrane module using hydrophobic membranes like Polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF) and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Effect of membrane wetting was evaluated by performing analytical techniques like contact angle analysis, FTIR, and SEM before ...
