Germination Response to Osmotic Potential, Osmotic Agents, and Temperature of Five Halophytes Occurring along a Salinity Gradient

open access: yesInternational Journal of Plant Sciences, 2019
Premise of research. Halophyte species grow where salt concentrations are high. Still, their germination may be affected by salts, either by creating an osmotic potential that prevents water uptake...

Root osmotic potential and length for two maize lines differing in leaf osmotic potential

Journal of Crop Improvement, 2019
Two maize (Zea mays L.) lines had previously been developed, one for expression in leaves of high osmotic adjustment (HOA) and the other for low osmotic adjustment (LOA).

Chloroplast acclimation to low osmotic potential

Plant Cell Reports, 1987
Photosynthetic potential of isolated chloroplasts was investigated during in situ water deficits. An eight day stress cycle imposed on spinach plants reduced leaf ψw by 0.57MPa, and leaf ψπ by 0.50MPa, resulting in partial turgor maintenance during the stress cycle. Pressure/volume curves confirmed the occurrence of osmotic adjustment.

Osmotic Potentials of Water-Saturated Mosses

Journal of Plant Physiology, 1993
Summary From 14 species of mosses of the temperate climate osmotic potentials (Ψ π ) at full turgidity were determined cryoscopically by use of both extracts produced from dried materials in consideration of the saturation water content and press sap squeezed out from water-saturated plants.

Quantifying Coupling Effects Between Soil Matric Potential and Osmotic Potential

Water Resources Research, 2023
AbstractSoil matric potential and osmotic potential are widely accepted as two independent components of total soil water potential. However, laboratory observations repeatedly demonstrated that matric potential can vary with salt concentration, implying a potential coupling between matric potential and osmotic potential.

Osmotic adjustment in cowpea plants: Interference of methods for estimating osmotic potential at full turgor

Plant Physiology and Biochemistry, 2019
Osmotic adjustment is a persisting controversy in studies on the effect of salt and water stress in cowpea crops. Our hypothesis is that the osmotic potential determination method interferes with the osmotic adjustment calculation. The objective of this study was to consider the osmotic adjustment comparing results obtained by pressure-volume (P-V ...

Determination of the osmotic potential for swelling of cat brain in vitro

Experimental Neurology, 1979
Abstract The osmotic potential for swelling of the brain was determined using feline cerebral tissue blocks as osmometers in deoxygenated Ringer's solution media containing various concentrations of the impermeant solute, polyethylene glycol 6000. The degree of swelling was determined gravimetrically.
