OSMOTIC SHOCK OF RAM SPERMATOZOA [PDF]
phosphate buffer containing 44 mm-glucose and the spermatozoa washed twice and resuspended at the original concentration. Aliquots of the washed and unwashed spermatozoa were then placed in the CFDA and dialysed against the Krebs-Ringer and an otherwise identical hypotonic diluent (167 m-osmole/1) containing only 18\m=.\5mm-NaCl. Dialysis was continued

Osmotic shock of fertilized mouse ova [PDF]
The effect of osmotic changes on fertilized mouse ova was studied by measuring their survival, defined as development into hatching blastocysts, after exposure to various concentrations of ethanediol (ethylene glycol). In addition, a Boyle-van't Hoff plot was derived from exposing ova to hypotonic and hypertonic solutions ranging from 0.1 to 2.8 osmol.

In addition to its well-established role in plant development, the hormone cytokinin regulates plant responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. It was previously shown that cytokinin signaling acts negatively upon drought and osmotic stress tolerance and ...

Hydrogels can exhibit a remarkably complex response to external stimuli and show rich mechanical behavior. Previous studies of the mechanics of hydrogel particles have generally focused on their static, rather than dynamic, response, as traditional ...

Lysis of Vibrio costicolus by Osmotic Shock [PDF]
SUMMARY: Suspensions of the halophilic organism Vibrio costicolus lysed when subjected to sufficient osmotic shock; this was revealed as a marked fall in optical density. Organisms in the logarithmic phase of growth, grown in media containing m-NaCl, when suspended in NaCl or LiCl solutions with concentrations m or lower lysed when the concentration ...

Osmotic and Heat Stress Effects on Segmentation. [PDF]
During vertebrate embryonic development, early skin, muscle, and bone progenitor populations organize into segments known as somites. Defects in this conserved process of segmentation lead to skeletal and muscular deformities, such as congenital ...

Cold Osmotic Shock in Saccharomyces cerevisiae [PDF]
Saccharomyces cerevisiae NCYC 366 is susceptible to cold osmotic shock. Exponentially growing cells from batch cultures grown in defined medium at 30 C, after being suspended in 0.8 m mannitol containing 10 m m ethylenedia-minetetraacetic acid and then resuspended in ice-cold 0.5 ...

Activation of Protein Kinase Cascades by Osmotic Shock [PDF]
Osmotic shock induces a variety of biochemical and physiological responses in vertebrate cells. By analyzing extracts obtained from rat 3Y1 fibroblastic cells exposed to hyper-osmolar media, we have found that mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and stress-activated protein kinases (SAPKs, also known as JNKs) are both activated in response to ...
