A novel technique is proposed to implement optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) estimation by using an improved binary particle swarm optimization (IBPSO) and deep neural network (DNN) based on amplitude histograms (AHs) of signals obtained after ...

Microresonator solitons for massively parallel coherent optical communications
Optical solitons are waveforms that preserve their shape while propagating, relying on a balance of dispersion and nonlinearity. Soliton-based data transmission schemes were investigated in the 1980s, promising to overcome the limitations imposed by ...

The authors discuss opportunities, challenges and requirements for successful commercialisation of space division multiplexing (SDM) in optical networks. The authors consider recent developments in SDM technology and focus on the importance of different geometrical parameters when designing multi‐core fibres and on the design choices for shared SDM ...

We focus on the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR)-aware optical path (lightpath) planning problem in spectrally and spatially flexible optical networks (SS-FONs) connected using weakly coupled multi-core fibers (MCFs) in which distance-adaptive and ...

Free‐space optical (FSO) communication is vital for modern wireless systems due to its high data rates, energy efficiency, secure transmission, and cost‐effectiveness. However, weather‐induced attenuation, turbulence, and pointing errors affect performance.

EVM and Achievable Data Rate Analysis of Clipped OFDM Signals in Visible Light Communication [PDF]
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been considered for visible light communication (VLC) thanks to its ability to boost data rates as well as its robustness against frequency-selective fading channels.

A 3-Dimensional Simplex Modulation Format with Improved OSNR Performance Compared to DP-BPSK [PDF]
The novel 3-dimensional modulation format 3D-Simplex offers potentially 1.2 dB higher OSNR tolerance than DP-DPSK while exhibiting the same spectral occupancy, modulating two bits per symbol. We verify this benefit experimen-tally and evaluate the transmission performance in a non-linear environment.

The performance of a gray‐coded dual polarization‐16 quadrature amplitude modulation (DP‐16 QAM)–based multiple input multiple output (MIMO)‐FSO link using coherent detection and digital signal processing (DSP) is investigated. The MIMO link is used to mitigate geometric loss, atmospheric attenuation, and atmospheric turbulence.

We propose two policies to select the route for an adaptive-alternative routing algorithm for all-optical networks. We use the NrPSR to find the Nr routes with lower cost for a given source-destination pair according to a cost function expanded in a ...
