Heterotopic ossification and rhabdomyolysis [PDF]

open access: yesSpinal Cord, 1995
Heterotopic ossification and rhabdomyolysis are well described entities but, as far as we know, their association has never been described in the literature. We recently treated a patient who presented with this association. After a suicide attempt, this patient developed rhabdomyolysis of the left upper and lower limbs with peripheral neurological ...

Heterotopic ossification: A review

open access: yesJournal of Rehabilitation Medicine, 2005
Heterotopic ossification is defined as the presence of lamellar bone at locations where bone normally does not exist. The condition must be distinguished from metastatic calcifications, which mainly occur in hypercalcaemia, and dystrophic calcifications in tumours. It is a frequent complication following central nervous system disorders (brain injuries,

Heterotopic ossification of tendon and ligament [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, 2020
AbstractMuch of the similarities of the tissue characteristics, pathologies and mechanisms of heterotopic ossification (HO) formation are shared between HO of tendon and ligament (HOTL). Unmet need and no effective treatment has been developed for HOTL, primarily attributable to poor understanding of cellular and molecular mechanisms.

Contemporary perspectives on heterotopic ossification

open access: yesJCI Insight, 2022
Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the formation of ectopic bone that is primarily genetically driven (fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva [FOP]) or acquired in the setting of trauma (tHO). HO has undergone intense investigation, especially over the last 50 years, as awareness has increased around improving clinical technologies and incidence, such as ...

Ultrasound‐Responsive 4D Bioscaffold for Synergistic Sonopiezoelectric‐Gaseous Osteosarcoma Therapy and Enhanced Bone Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
An acoustic‐responsive therapeutic platform for synergistic sonopiezoelectric‐gaseous osteosarcoma therapy and bone regeneration is fabricated through the joint loading of few‐layer black phosphorus nanosheets and S‐Nitroso‐L‐glutathione onto the 3D‐printed bioactive glass scaffolds.

Heterotopic Ossification: A Comprehensive Review [PDF]

open access: yesJBMR Plus, 2019
ABSTRACTHeterotopic ossification (HO) is a diverse pathologic process, defined as the formation of extraskeletal bone in muscle and soft tissues. HO can be conceptualized as a tissue repair process gone awry and is a common complication of trauma and surgery. This comprehensive review seeks to synthesize the clinical, pathoetiologic, and basic biologic

A Splice‐Region Variant Causes an Atypical Presentation of GNAS Inactivation Disorder

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Medical Genetics Part A, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Pathogenic variants in GNAS can cause a wide range of diseases including pseudohypoparathyroidism, pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism, McCune‐Albright syndrome, among others. The specific phenotypic features that may be seen are influenced by the variant type and location in the gene, whether it causes loss or gain of function, and whether it is ...

A mouse coccygeal intervertebral disc degeneration model with tail‐looping constructed using a suturing method

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
A novel, simple coccygeal intervertebral disc degeneration model, using a suturing method for tail‐looping, without the need for external fixation and complex surgery. The model has high reproducibility and stability and overcomes the disadvantages of the existing animal models of disc degeneration.

Harnessing μ‐X‐Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy as a Tool to Assess Extracellular Vesicle‐Induced Biomineralization

open access: yesAdvanced NanoBiomed Research, EarlyView.
This study presents an innovative approach to evaluate cell‐mediated biomineralization using μ‐X‐ray fluorescence spectroscopy. By generating elemental maps, the evaluation of mineral deposition by osteoblasts can be assessed in terms of both spatial distribution and degree of maturity.

Deciphering the skeletal interoceptive circuitry to control bone homeostasis

open access: yesBMEMat, EarlyView.
This review introduces the skeletal interoceptive circuitry, covering the ascending signals from bone tissues to the brain (sensors), the central neural circuits that integrate this information and dispatch commands (CPU), and the descending pathways that regulate bone homeostasis (effectors).
