Ecological Perspectives on Synthetic Biology: Insights from Microbial Population Biology
The metabolic capabilities of microbes are the basis for many major biotechnological advances, exploiting microbial diversity by selection or engineering of single strains.

Mutualistic interactions drive ecological niche convergence in a diverse butterfly community. [PDF]
Ecological communities are structured in part by evolutionary interactions among their members. A number of recent studies incorporating phylogenetics into community ecology have upheld the paradigm that competition drives ecological divergence among ...

Darwinism and Organizational Ecology: A Reply to Reydon and Scholz [PDF]
In an earlier article published in this journal I challenge Reydon and Scholz's (2009) claim that Organizational Ecology is a non-Darwinian program.

The Morphogenesis Of Evolutionary Developmental Biology [PDF]
The early studies of evolutionary developmental biology (Evo-Devo) come from several sources. Tributaries flowing into Evo-Devo came from such disciplines as embryology, developmental genetics, evolutionary biology, ecology, paleontology, systematics ...

Island time and the interplay between ecology and evolution in species diversification. [PDF]
Research on the dynamics of biodiversity has progressed tremendously over recent years, although in two separate directions - ecological, to determine change over space at a given time, and evolutionary, to understand change over time.

Intraspecific variation in thermal acclimation and tolerance between populations of the winter ant, Prenolepis imparis. [PDF]
Thermal phenotypic plasticity, otherwise known as acclimation, plays an essential role in how organisms respond to short-term temperature changes.

Insights into a long life without cancer: The case of the bowhead whale
Long‐lived, large‐bodied organisms have evolved powerful anticancer mechanisms that preserve cellular and tissue integrity across extended lifespans. A recent study by Firsanov et al. shows that greater genome stability is a key factor underlying the remarkable longevity and cancer resistance of one such species, the bowhead whale.

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...
