Patterns and determinants of wood physical and mechanical properties across major tree species in China

open access: yes, 2015
The physical and mechanical properties of wood affect the growth and development of trees, and also act as the main criteria when determining wood usage.

Life satisfaction, health, self-evaluation and sexuality in current university students of sport sciences, education and natural sciences

open access: yesActa Gymnica, 2014
Background: Lifestyle and health of an individual are influenced by many factors; a significant factor is life satisfaction. Life satisfaction is understood as a multidimensional construct closely related to the area of personal wellbeing and quality of ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Everyday-life: "the fourth social dimension?

open access: yesGEOUSP: Espaço e Tempo, 1997
By comparing some of Henri Lefebvre's and Juergen Haberma s reflections, this article points out the emergence of the concepts of everyday life and "lived world" in the philosophical field and on human sciences (specially in Geography).

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Problems and prospects of portmanteau titles and other neologisms for interface disciplines in the Earth and life sciences

open access: yesProgress in Physical Geography: Earth and Environment
The Earth and life sciences are replete with portmanteau (blended) words and neologisms. Researchers at the interfaces between the traditional disciplines within the Earth and life sciences have coined dual titles for ‘new’ disciplines, such as geobiology/biogeology and ecohydrology/hydroecology.

Toward a new “Fractals-General Science”

open access: yesAlexandria Engineering Journal, 2014
A recent study has shown that everywhere real systems follow common “fractals-general stacking behavior” during their change pathways (or evolutionary life cycles).
