FLUCTUATING ASYMMETRY IN THE OTOLITH WIDTH AND LENGTH OF ADULT TELEOST (Beryx splendens LOWE, 1834) (FAMILY: BERCIDAE) COLLECTED FROM THE ARABIAN SEA COASTS OF SULTANATE OF OMAN [PDF]

open access: yesCroatian Journal of Fisheries, 2010
Fluctuating asymmetry was described for the otolith width and length of adult teleost Beryx splendens. The results showed that the level of asymmetry of the otolith width was the highest among the two asymmetry values obtained for the otolith of B ...

Estimating Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) length at first maturity from their age, sex and temperature experience around South Georgia

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) are a long‐lived, slow‐growing deep‐sea species endemic to the Southern Hemisphere and the focus of longline fisheries managed to ensure sustainable exploitation. Managing the fisheries relies on accurate stock assessments that include pertinent biological and exploitation processes.

The Relationship Between Fish Length and Otolith Size and Weight of the Australian Ancnovy, Engraulis australis (Clupeiformes, Engraulidae), Retrieved from the Food of the Australasian Gannet, Morus serrator (Suliformes, Sulidae), Hauraki Gulf, New Zealnd

open access: yesZoodiversity, 2021
Relationships between fish length and otolith length, width and mass were examined in the Australian anchovy Engraulis australis (White, 1790) recovered from the food of Gannet examined from colonies at islands of Horuhoru Rock and Mahuki Islands in the ...

Inter-population differences in otolith morphology are genetically encoded in the killifish Aphanius fasciatus (Cyprinodontiformes)

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2013
Inter-population differences in otolith shape, morphology and chemistry have been used effectively as indicators for stock assessment or for recognizing environmental adaptation in fishes.

Oxytetracycline as an otolith chemical marker in Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus): Technical feasibility in culture

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Reliable discrimination between wild and cultured fish is essential for traceability in aquaculture. This study reports the first successful application of intramuscular oxytetracycline (OTC) injection for otolith marking in juveniles of Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus).

An investigation into the diet of elephant fish (Callorhinchus milii) in the waters of Aotearoa/New Zealand

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Chondrichthyans (sharks, rays and chimaeras) are increasingly understood to be an important part of ocean ecosystems, but their ecological role is unclear. Callorhinchus milii (elephant fish) is a chimaera species endemic to Aotearoa/New Zealand and southern Australian waters.

Temperature, but not acidification, influences the growth and lipid profile of juvenile sand whiting, Sillago ciliata (Cuvier 1829)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Seafood provides an essential source of macro‐ and micronutrients for coastal communities worldwide. Climate change is a key threat to seafood security, altering the sizes, abundances, distributions, physiology and ecological interactions of fisheries species, and increasingly, there is evidence of impacts to seafood nutritional quality.

Otolith‐based age determination in Anguilla anguilla (Linnaeus 1758) from Lake Vistonida, NE Greece: A modified Crack and Burn protocol

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract This study presents a modified otolith preparation protocol to estimate the age of Anguilla from Lake Vistonida (NE Greece). In experimental attempts, 300 otoliths were processed using standard and modified eel ageing methods, producing low success rates (0%–20%) due to poor annuli visibility and structural damage.

Assessing fish length-otolith relationships in Scorpaenidae species: Implications for sustainable fisheries management in Antalya Bay, Türkiye

open access: yesOceanological and Hydrobiological Studies
This study explores relationships between fish size (total length) and otolith dimensions (weight, length, width) in four scorpaenid species from Antalya Bay, Türkiye, supporting sustainable fisheries management.

Taxonomic inflation in fish systematics: A critical review with illustrative evidence assessment and integrative case study of the Salmo trutta Complex

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Fish species are being described at an accelerating rate, but a substantial fraction of recent descriptions rests on evidentiary standards too weak to distinguish genuine species‐level discontinuities from intraspecific variation, local adaptation and the artefacts of single‐marker analyses, a pattern of taxonomic inflation with documented ...
