Abstract With approximately 1080 species, Sonerileae is the second‐largest tribe in the Melastomataceae. Approximately 40% of the Sonerileae species belong to fleshy‐fruited genera (Catanthera, Heteroblemma, Kendrickia, Medinilla, Pachycentria, Plethiandra).
