Hereditary convulsions in an outbred prairie vole line
Epilepsy Research, 2023Patients with epilepsy are significantly burdened by the disease due to long-term health risks, the severe side effect profiles of anti-epileptic drugs, and the strong possibility of pharmacoresistant refractory seizures. New animal models of epilepsy with unique characteristics promise to further research to address these ongoing problems.

Reversal of diabetes in outbred mice by islet allotransplantation
Diabetes, 1986The combination of donor pretreatment with cyclophosphamide, organ culture in 95% O2:5% CO2 for 7–10 days, and short-term immunosuppression of recipients with cyclosporin A (CsA) were necessary to obtain 100% survival of single-cluster BALB/c islet allografts in outbred mice.

Genetic variance of laboratory outbred Swiss mice
Nature, 1980The extent of allelic variation has been estimated at 46 structural gene loci within three major colonies of Swiss mice and between inbred derivative strains. The colonies have retained nearly the same amount and type of variation found in natural murine or human populations despite laboratory propagation for more than 50 years (175 generations).

The Value of Outbred Rodent Models in Cancer Research
Trends in Cancer, 2018Mouse models of breast cancer are valuable research tools, but their usefulness is restricted by a series of features inherent to their physiology, such as low endogenous estrogens and genetics (inbred status). Depending on the specific questions asked, outbred rodents like Peromyscus may provide answers that laboratory mice cannot.

Experimental Allergic Encephalomyelitis in Inbred and Outbred Mice
The Journal of Immunology, 1973Abstract Experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) was produced in 3 of 14 inbred and 3 of 4 outbred mouse strains. A single immunization with mouse spinal cord, mycobacterial adjuvant and pertussis vaccine produced clinical signs of EAE in most members of susceptible strains after 12 to 18 days.

Experimental Borrelia burgdorferi infection of outbred mice
Journal of Clinical Microbiology, 1992Infectivity of Borrelia burgdorferi strain 297 in normal outbred ddY mice was examined. Strain 297 was inoculated intraperitoneally in 3-week-old outbred ddY mice. B. burgdorferi was routinely cultured from the heart and urinary bladder 5 to 84 days postinoculation.

Phenotypic variability of inbred and outbred mice
Nature, 1976THE relative phenotypic variability of inbred and commercially available outbred stock mice has never been satisfactorily investigated, even though it has important implications in the design of animal experiments. Early workers1 suggested that “the published facts suggest that inbred strains are usually more variable than inter-strain hybrids, with ...

Polyarteritis Nodosa-like Disease in Outbred Mice
Nature, 1966Helyer and Howie1 described a disease of NZB/BL × NZY/BL and NZB/BL × NZW/BL F1 hybrid mice closely resembling human systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in renal histology. A breeding nucleus of these mice was provided by Drs. F. and M. Bielschowsky and Dr. Howie, to allow confirmation of their histological findings. Similar lesions were found in NZB/BL

BREEDING QUALITIES OF INBRED AND OUTBRED ANIMALS
Sheep, goats, woolen business, 2020The article deals with issues related to the useof inbreeding in the selection process: the infl uence of inbreeding on the breeding qualities of producers and females; breeding qualities of inbred and outbred producers; inbreeding – asa method for obtaining prepotent producers; methods for assessing prepotency.

Heligmosomoides polygyrus:Resistance in Inbred, Outbred, and Selected Mice
Experimental Parasitology, 1996Mice reared selectively as high- and low- immune responders to reinfection with Heligmosomoides polygyrus showed extremes of resistance and susceptibility after infection when compared to inbred BALB/C, DBA/I, CBA, and SJL/J and outbred Quackenbush (Q) mice. The levels of anti-H. polygyrus total IgG and IgG1, IgG2b, and IgG3 isotype antibodies detected
