Exacerbations in COPD patients treated with Inhaled Corticosteroids/Long-acting β2 agonists combinations, switching to another combination drugs or inhaler device: A “real – world” study

open access: yesCogent Medicine, 2017
This study investigates the effects of switching to different devices of the same active substance or between different active substances, in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) treated with Inhaled Corticosteroids (ICS) plus Long ...

The cytoskeletal control of B cell receptor and integrin signaling in normal B cells and chronic lymphocytic leukemia

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In lymphoid organs, antigen recognition and B cell receptor signaling rely on integrins and the cytoskeleton. Integrins act as mechanoreceptors, couple B cell receptor activation to cytoskeletal remodeling, and support immune synapse formation as well as antigen extraction.

Cutaneous Manifestations in Patients with Dermatomyositis, Are They Only Skin Deep?

open access: yesDermatology and Therapy
Background Dermatomyositis (DM) is a rare and severely debilitating autoimmune disease that can affect children and adults; however, there is little understanding of the patient-reported experience and uncertainty around validated clinical outcomes ...

Treatment Effects on Ordinal Outcomes: Causal Estimands and Sharp Bounds [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2015
Assessing the causal effects of interventions on ordinal outcomes is an important objective of many educational and behavioral studies. Under the potential outcomes framework, we can define causal effects as comparisons between the potential outcomes under treatment and control.

Flow‐based immunomagnetic enrichment of circulating tumor cells from diagnostic leukapheresis product

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The number of circulating tumor cells obtained from prostate cancer patients was increased approximately 5‐fold compared to regular CellSearch when processing 2 mL diagnostic leukapheresis material aliquots and increased by 44‐fold when processing 20 mL DLA aliquots using the flow enrichment target capture Halbach‐array.

Unlocking the potential of tumor‐derived DNA in urine for cancer detection: methodological challenges and opportunities

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Urine is a rich source of biomarkers for cancer detection. Tumor‐derived material is released into the bloodstream and transported to the urine. Urine can easily be collected from individuals, allowing non‐invasive cancer detection. This review discusses the rationale behind urine‐based cancer detection and its potential for cancer diagnostics ...

Characterizing direct and indirect causal effects when outcomes are dependent due to treatment spillover and outcome spillover [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
We provide novel insight into causal inference when both treatment spillover and outcome spillover occur in connected populations, by taking advantage of recent advances in statistical network analysis. Scenarios with treatment spillover and outcome spillover are challenging, because both forms of spillover affect outcomes and therefore treatment ...
