Over-the-Horizon radar in the HF band

Proceedings of the IEEE, 1974
Over-the-horizon (OTH) HF radar using sky-wave propagation via refraction by the ionosphere is capable of detecting targets at distances an order of magnitude greater than conventional microwave radar limited by the line of sight. Some of the characteristics, capabilities, and limitations of OTH radar based on the experience of the MADRE radar as ...

Looking over the horizon (HF radar)

IEEE Spectrum, 1990
The history of HF (over-the-horizon) radar and its basic principles are outlined. Advances in signal processing that have made HF radar an operational reality are reviewed. Working units that the US Navy and the US Air force have in place, as well as some units under construction are described.

Detection and Tracking of Multipath Targets in Over-the-Horizon Radar

IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems, 2019
In skywave over-the-horizon radar, the ionosphere often supports multiple propagation paths, and a single target can appear as a family of returns. This paper presents two new tracking approaches for this environment: The first uses measurement fusion, and the second uses group-target track-before-detect algorithm.

Climatological model of over-the-horizon radar (CMOR)

open access: yes2017 XXXIInd General Assembly and Scientific Symposium of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI GASS), 2017
Models of radar systems are required for a variety of reasons. The sophistication of these models is highly dependant on their purpose; for instance microwave radar models which are designed to be integrated into existing wargaming simulation frameworks will often be low-fidelity models.

Concurrent Operation of Two Over-the-Horizon Radars

IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Signal Processing, 2007
By exploiting the reflective and refractive nature of high-frequency (HF) radiowave propagation through the ionosphere or the conducting sea surface, over-the-horizon radar (OTHR) systems perform wide-area surveillance at long range well beyond the limit of the horizon of conventional line-of-sight (LOS) radars.

Multitarget Tracking Using Over-the-Horizon Radar

2018 21st International Conference on Information Fusion (FUSION), 2018
Most conventional multitarget tracking systems assume that in each scan there is at most one measurement for each target. This assumption is, however, not valid for over-the-horizon radar (OTHR), where a target can generate multiple measurements through different propagation modes. A typical multitarget tracking algorithm may fail in this system.

Target tracking in over the horizon radar

Signal Processing, Sensor/Information Fusion, and Target Recognition XXVIII, 2019
This paper describes the application of the Deep Target Extractor (DTE), developed from the Maximum Likelihood Probabilistic Multiple Hypothesis Tracker (ML-PMHT), to measurements from an over-the-horizon radar (OTHR) observing a highly maneuvering target (HMT).

Skywave over-the-horizon backscatter radar

2001 CIE International Conference on Radar Proceedings (Cat No.01TH8559), 2002
Skywave over-the-horizon backscatter radar (OTHR) has great potential for detecting such targets as cruise missiles, stealth aircraft, the powered trajectory of ballistic missiles and aircraft carriers over long distances and at the same time. This paper evaluates the detectability of OTHR for small targets through experimental research and emulation ...

Over the horizon radar

2008 IEEE Radar Conference, 2008
The tutorial provides an introduction to the fundamental principles of high frequency over-the-horizon (OTH) radar, including sky-wave and surface-wave systems as well as other bi-static HF radar architectures. The main challenges of operating in the HF environment are described and connected to motivate and explain the architecture and design of ...
