IGBT over voltage protection scheme in quasi resonant induction heating applications
2015 Annual IEEE India Conference (INDICON), 2015Induction heating for domestic usage is quite popular and in some countries, it is a highly cost-sensitive product. A single IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) quasi resonant power stage is the most popular topology for this application. In this paper we explain method in which the topology works reliably irrespective of widely varying input ...

Characteristic Prediction of a Varistor in Over-Voltage Protection Application
2014This paper presents a characteristic prediction of a varistor for modeling a varistor in over-voltage protection applications. Variable resistor (Varistor) is one of common devices to protect following electric devices from over-voltage. However, the principle of varistor is still unclear due to its non-linear characteristics between amount of voltage ...

Integrated avalanche diode for 600 V Trench IGBT over-voltage protection
CAS 2011 Proceedings (2011 International Semiconductor Conference), 2011Avalanche multiplication has been one of the major destructive failure mechanisms in IGBTs; in order to avoid operating an IGBT under abnormal conditions, it is desirable to develop peripheral protecting circuits monolithically integrated without compromising the operation and performance of the IGBT.

Research on Commutating Over-Voltage Protection for ITER Poloidal Field Converter
IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science, 2013This paper presents the commutating over-voltage snubber circuit design method of a thyristor converter that is applied to the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor poloidal field-converter module. In the course of poloidal field ac/dc converter normal operation, large transient surges called commutating over-voltages may be generated ...

A high-voltage light-activated thyristor with a novel over-voltage self-protection structure
IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices, 1987A high-voltage self-protected thyristor with a well structure formed in its p-base layer whose operation is based on avalanche breakdown is described. The device structure is simple and easy to fabricate compared to other avalanche-type devices. Numerical analyses and experiments demonstrate that the breakover voltage can be controlled by varying the ...

Analysis of over-voltage protecting techniques applied to over-head insulated lines
2007 Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing Expo, 2007To protect over-head insulated power distribution lines from surge over-voltage breakdown, even when a line conductor is melted down when lighting striking on the lines, nonlinear over-voltage protectors and low melting point discharge insulators are used as primary over-voltage protection techniques and have been widely applied in China for more than ...

An enclosed spark-gap for over-voltage protection
Journal of the Institution of Electrical Engineers - Part IIIA: Radiolocation, 1946In radar circuits, if, under fault conditions, the modulator cable is not discharged, overvoltages may arise which are dangerous to components. The paper describes a spark-gap employed as a protective device. Such a gap should break down without time-lag at a little above the circuit-operating voltage.

Under Voltage and Over Voltage Monitor to Protect the Electrical Load
2019 IEEE PES/IAS PowerAfrica, 2019This research paper is presented to design a system that will monitor and protects the electrical loads from under voltage and over voltage supply, which may be due to unforeseen adverse effects of electrical voltages or voltage fluctuations. These adverse effects of voltage will affect the power quality that is being supplied to the electrical loads ...

An Over Voltage Protection Circuit for Series Regulator Power Supplies
IETE Journal of Education, 1975AbstractAn over voltage protection circuit that protects the load from over voltages, in case of series transistor failure in a series regulator is discussed here. If the series transistor gets open between collector and emitter terminals, output becomes zero. In case of a short this circuit comes into action and makes the output voltage fall to zero.

Proceedings of Power and Energy Systems in Converging Markets, 2002
A survey of international wireless operators and power engineers confirms that remote wireless sites experience recurring problems with lightning surges and temporary overvoltages (including swells). There is considerable confusion regarding the difference between these power disturbances and their effect on rectifiers and other loads.
