Self-medication is recognised today as an important part of health-care systems. Empirical studies worldwide show that most consumers use self-medication preparations in a safe and proper way. Because of this, a liberal regulatory environment, concerning, in particular, the change from prescription to nonprescription status, seems appropriate.

Despite the widespread use of over-the-counter (OTC) medications, their utilization is rarely ascertained at hospital admission. Presented here is an interesting case of acute renal failure and hemolytic anemia attributable to a commonly utilized OTC medication. The chronic use of phenazopyridine accounted for all of these findings.
