Time-Overcurrent Relay Coordination: A Review

International Journal of Emerging Electric Power Systems, 2005
When two protective apparatus installed in series have characteristics, which provide a specified operating sequence, they are said to be coordinated or selective. The coordination of directional overcurrent relays poses serious problems in the modern complex power system networks, which are interconnected.

Design and Implementation of Overcurrent Protection Relay

Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology, 2020
Protective relays have been designed with different technologies resulting in electromechanical, solid-state, and numerical devices. Speed and reliability are the two most important characteristics of a protective relay. Other capabilities such as monitoring and recording are supposed to be of secondary priority. The new technology using combination of

Practical Evaluation of Overcurrent Protective Relay Performance in Power Distribution System

2024 IEEE 4th International Maghreb Meeting of the Conference on Sciences and Techniques of Automatic Control and Computer Engineering (MI-STA)
Power distribution system suffers several disturbances during its operation which cause problems in reliability of system. The reliability depends on the successful operation of protective relays that are used in protective scheme to detect disturbances ...

Directional overcurrent relays

2011
Directional overcurrent protection is used when it is necessary to protect the system against fault currents that could circulate in both directions through a system element, and when bidirectional overcurrent protection could produce unnecessary disconnection of circuits.

Microcomputer-based multiple overcurrent relays

Computers in Industry, 1993
Abstract This paper presents an application of the most recent modern technology to implement overcurrent relaying functions in a power system. A microprocessor-based single and multiple overcurrent relays have been reported. In this work it is shown that a microcomputer in conjunction with an interface board can be economically used to develop a ...

Accurate coordination method based on the dynamic model of overcurrent relay for industrial power networks taking contribution of induction motors into account

IET Generation, Transmission & Distribution, 2020
Induction motors are widely used in the industry. These motors contribute to short-circuit currents (SCCs) by generating transient currents. The transient component in the SCC causes a change in the operating times of the overcurrent (OC) relays and ...

Testing dynamic characteristics of overcurrent relays

IEEE WESCANEX 93 Communications, Computers and Power in the Modern Environment - Conference Proceedings, 2002
Test methods for determining the dynamic characteristics of an overcurrent relay are discussed. By dynamics is meant the response of the relay to a current of varying magnitude. The test method, originated by IREQ, is used by Hydro Quebec to determine the ability of new relays to coordinate with the installed base of induction relays.

Design of a microprocessor-based overcurrent relay

[Proceedings] WESCANEX '91, 2002
The authors describe the design of a microprocessor-based overcurrent relay that is suitable for protecting distribution and subtransmission networks. A modified technique for modeling the time-current characteristics is described. The proposed design is implemented using a Texas Instruments TMS320C25 digital signal processor.
