Group Agency and Overdetermination

Ethical Theory and Moral Practice, 2012
A morally objectionable outcome can be overdetermined by the actions of multiple individual agents. In such cases, the outcome is the same regardless of what any individual does or does not do. (For a clear example of such a case, imagine the execution of an innocent person by a firing squad.) We argue that, in some of these types of cases, (a) there ...

Overdetermination, Ambivalence, Contradiction

Philosophy Today, 2023
This paper employs a psychoanalytic framework of the concept of contradiction to engage the methodological self-assuredness in which the philosophical concept of contradiction, as developed by Goldschmidt, is mapped onto a historical framework.

Overdetermined Elliptic Systems

Foundations of Computational Mathematics, 2005
We consider linear overdetermined systems of partial differential equations. We show that the introduction of weights classically used for the definition of ellipticity is not necessary, as any system that is elliptic with respect to some weights becomes elliptic without weights during its completion to involution.

An Overdetermined Schwarz Alternating Method

SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing, 1996
Among the various modifications of the Schwarz alternating method (SAM), the generalization of the SAM using Robin condition on the artificial boundaries improves the rate of convergence considerably. On the other hand, sensitivity of the convergence to the parameter in the Robin condition has limited its practical applications.

Overdetermination and Obligation

2021
Abstract This chapter is concerned with circumstances where a person’s act makes no difference to the occurrence of a negative outcome, but is a member of a group of acts that does make such a difference. In the light of an analysis of these circumstances, it argues against two familiar ideas.

An overdetermined system

Quarterly of Applied Mathematics, 1983
The Korteweg stress tensor has been the object of considerable interest recently since it provides a purely mechanical approach to the problem of liquid-vapor phase equilibria independent of various thermodynamical assumptions. Here we show that, unless rather special conditions are satisfied, the only physical phase boundaries which are consistent ...

Dialectics and Overdetermination

2017
Marx wrote that he used a dialectical method he had extracted from Hegel. Arguing the impossibility of divorcing Hegel's dialectic from his idealism, Althusser proposed overdetermination as an alternative materialist framework. This chapter begins with Hegel's dialectic before turning to Marx's use of it and then to overdetermination as it was proposed
