Trazodone did not appear to be a potent respiratory depressant or cardiotoxic or neurotoxic agent in our cases. Further experience is needed to determine a recommended treatment procedure. It is not clear whether the experience with these two cases can be extrapolated to elderly patients, patients with serious physical illnesses, or cases involving ...

A case of acute intoxication in a 60-yr-old woman who ingested 20 mg of clonidine is presented. The patient showed CNS depression (bradycardia, hypotonia) with systemic hypertension and peripheral vasoconstriction. She was treated with atropine and sodium nitroprusside. There was no recurrence and the patient recovered in 8 days.

A patient who ingested 1.5 g pentazocine developed status epilepticus, coma, respiratory depression, acidosis, profound hypotension, and ventricular arrhythmias. Although this patient survived after institution of general supportive measures, she did not respond to usual doses of naloxone.

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is the treatment of choice for acetaminophen overdose. With this therapy, morbidity from overdose can be held to a minimum. Mortality is rare in any case and virtually nonexistent in treated patients. Unless a high index of suspicion is maintained, the diagnosis may be missed until it is too late for effective antidotal treatment.
