Overstory mortality as an indicator of forest health in California
Environmental Monitoring and Assessment, 1996The interagency Forest Health Monitoring Program involves a network of about 4200 forest plots on a triangular grid across the United States. We present data on recent mortality of trees ≥27.9 cm diameter from the first three years of measurements in California (1992-1994).

Overstory–Understory Relationships
2013A key issue for sustainable management of oak woodlands is understanding the complex overstory-understory relationships that influence ecosystem productivity and stability. Oak removal is traditionally practiced in Californian ranches and Spanish oak dehesas to increase forage for grazing, but the response of the understory, and subsequently of the ...

Forest Science, 1978
Abstract This study examines basal area and three measures of canopy cover as predictors of both throughfall and light in an Arizona ponderosa pine forest. Overhead canopy cover, as measured with canopy photographs, accounted for the largest proportion of the variance in throughfall.

Phenological Differences Between Understory and Overstory
2009The timing of phenological events varies both among species, and also among individuals of the same species. Here we use a 12-year record of spring and autumn phenology for 33 woody species at the Harvard Forest to investigate these differences. Specifically, we focus on patterns of leaf budburst, expansion, coloration and fall, in the context of ...

The Mortality of Midwestern Overstory Oaks as a Bioindicator of Environmental Stress
Ecological Applications, 1999Tree mortality rates are potential indicators of the impact of environmental stresses on forests. But the relationship between environmental stress and tree mortality is poorly understood, particularly in forests not experiencing epidemic mortality.

Overstory spread and intensification of hemlock dwarf mistletoe
Canadian Journal of Forest Research, 1977Development of dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobiumtsugense (Rosendahl) G.N. Jones) on 51 western hemlock (Tsugaheterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.) trees planted in 1963 at varying distances from an infected residual tree is described. Distribution of infections in the planted trees related directly to seed-dispersal patterns, i.e., it was influenced mainly by ...

Timing Overstory Removal in Longleaf Pine
Journal of Forestry, 1975Abstract In three studies with longleaf seedlings through 10 years of age, overstory competition sharply reduced growth. Stands developed most rapidly with early release (by seedling age 3), but even when release was delayed until age 8, seedlings responded well to overstory removal. The percent of any seedling stand in active height

[Understory effects on overstory trees: A review.]
Ying yong sheng tai xue bao = The journal of applied ecology, 2018Plant-plant interactions play a key role in regulating the composition and structure of communities and ecosystems. Studies of plant-plant interactions in forest ecosystems have traditionally concentrated on either tree-tree interactions or overstory species' impacts on understory plants.
