Overstory influences on light attenuation patterns and understory plant community diversity and composition in southern boreal forests of Quebec

Canadian Journal of Forest Research, 2006
We have characterized overstory light transmission, understory light levels, and plant communities in mixed wood boreal forests of northwestern Quebec with the objective of understanding how overstory light transmission interacts with composition and time since disturbance to influence the diversity and composition of understory vegetation, and, in ...

Fine-scale heterogeneity in overstory composition contributes to heterogeneity of wildfire severity in southern boreal forest

Journal of Forest Research, 2011
Wildfire can create a mosaic of impacts of varying severity across the landscape. Although widely recognized, this feature and its causes are little understood or studied in ecology. We studied a 1,200-ha wildfire in the southern boreal forest of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) in northeastern Minnesota, USA, using 275 ground plots ...

Tree species composition and selection effects drive overstory and understory productivity in reforested oil sands mining sites

Land Degradation & Development, 2020
AbstractReforestation is a feasible option for the eventual restoration of biodiversity and ecosystem services on deforested oil‐sands mining sites. The associations between plant diversity and productivity spanning the different strata of restoration forests, in conjunction with specific factors that may impact these relationships, remain uncertain ...

Patterns of seedling and overstory composition along a gradient of hurricane disturbance in an old-growth bottomland hardwood community

Canadian Journal of Forest Research, 1999
Disturbance patterns and species composition in the seedling and canopy layers were examined across the range of post-hurricane damage in an old-growth bottomland hardwood forest. Canopy coverage, tip-up number and area, snags, and coarse woody debris were quantified in plots along randomly oriented transects established in bottomland hardwood stands ...

Effects of overstory composition and prescribed fire on fuel loading across a heterogeneous managed landscape in the southeastern USA

Forest Ecology and Management, 2012
In the southeastern USA, land use history, forest management and natural geomorphic features have created heterogeneous fuel loads. This apparent temporal and spatial variation in fuel loads make it difficult to reliably assess potential fire behavior from remotely sensed canopy variables to determine risk and to prescribe treatments.

Relation Between Overstory Composition and Subsequent Defoliation by the Gypsy Moth

Journal of Forestry, 1974
Abstract The percentage of favored food in the over-story was closely related to the subsequent level of defoliation by the gypsy moth. Thus the silvicultural recommendations that are based on the "favored food" theory may be valid with respect to abating the damage done by this insect to the forest.

Seventy-year record of changes in the composition of overstory species by elevation on the Bartlett Experimental Forest

2010
Remeasurements over a 70-year period (1931-1932 to 2002-2003) on 404 cruise plots on the Bartlett Experimental Forest in New Hampshire provided a record of landscape-level changes in the composition of overstory species over time by elevation and d.b.h. (diameter at breast height) classes. Typically, early to midsuccessional species declined while late

Composition, Biomass, and Overstory Spatial Patterns in a Mature Pine-Hardwood Stand in Southeastern Arkansas

Castanea, 2013
ABSTRACT  A 1.21-ha plot was established in a mature pine–hardwood forest (Hyatt's Woods) along a low stream terrace in southeastern Arkansas. Compositionally, this stand had considerable arboreal richness, with 26 different tree species ≥9 cm in diameter.

The effect of overstory composition on understory woody regeneration and species richness in 7-year-old plantations in Costa Rica

Forest Ecology and Management, 1997
Abstract Regeneration under tropical plantations has been suggested as a route to facilitate the restoration of natural forests on degraded deforested lands in the tropics. We tested the hypothesis that 7-year-old tree plantations would have greater abundance and species richness of woody colonizers compared to abandoned pastures, but that the ...

Effects of time since stand-replacing fire and overstory composition on live-tree structural diversity in the boreal forest of central Canada

Canadian Journal of Forest Research, 2008
Stand structure diversity is hypothesized (i) to increase with stand development and (ii) to be greater in mixedwood stands than in conifer and broadleaf stands. We examined the effects of time since stand-replacing fire (TSF) and overstory type on stand volume, stand density, and tree-size variability, which is measured using Shannon’s diversity index
